Hi all

Have had a good trawl but can't find anything like this, if I've missed it, I'd be happy to be pointed at it.

What I'm basically thinking of is a way to get the registered lurkers to start posting instead of just harvesting info from the forums.

Therefore, this needs to be a multi-facet mod, and as best I can organise my jumbled thoughts, it goes like this .....

  • 1. Unregistered guests can be prompted to sign up using all the normal enticements and mods to nag them into doing so.
  • 2. When someone signs up, the registration screen, email and login screen gives them a warning while they have no posts - basically a "you have X days to begin posting before your registration is cancelled.  As you post more topics and replies, you get access to more boards and topics."  Admin sets the number of days, which (if possible) can be varied by membership group (a-la- Member Group on Registration existing mod).
  • 3. The nag box provides a link to a consequences warning pop-up (or page ?) where admin can set a number of consequences for failing to post in the allotted timespan - e.g. email address blocked so that it required manual approval in future, pay to reregister (might need a payment button add-in), and other such nasties up to and including a block on the IP address or domain (if not a public web-based email address) - the nasties would depend on the forum installation and what it covers.
  • 4. A nag box for dormant users - similar functions to above but with a more "tolerant" time frame, say not posted for 90 / 180 / 270 / 365 days before hammer falls.
  • 5. Warning emails sent out at 30% / 60% / expiry of the pre-set time limit for first post of newbies, or dormancy of previously active users. - would need an over-ride at install of mod that the grace period for newbies / nag period for old hands begins from mod install, not dates of last registered activity by users (though I suppose this could be admin selectable during set-up?)
A mod like this would also free up a lot of admin time in keeping the member list clean of "dead" registrations and nosy parkers who only signed up to see if they really wanted to use the site but decided they didn't.

There's another use to this as well, I recently discovered that there are now services out there offering 10-minue online email accounts (email address expires after 10 minutes and is deleted) which are being specifically marketed to people wanting to sign up to forums and the like but don't want to use their main (or real) email accounts.

  • 6. A mod of this nature could monitor failed email delivery attempts and after (say) 3 failed deliveries, the account is fully banned - user name, email address, and IP address - by auto adding to the standard SMP ban list.
Remembering the idea is that non-posting registrants get the chop after an admin-set period, the failure of 3 email delivery attempts could be set to over-ride the time driven de-registration (optional).

These are just my rough thoughts on it - if any of the above exists in other mods, I'd love to hear about them.  My forum is suffering from a 95% never-active rate of registrations, which does not include the spambot-registrations (which are easy to spot and delete).

Hope to hear from y'all
