PHPNuke with SMF

hi there , i have used SMF and lemme tell you i like it better than phpbb or any other forum in that case.

I was thinking whether is there a way to use PHPnuke with SMF ? Like can some module or bridge can be made?

Hi Xenon,

There is a fairly straight-forward way to use SMF within PHP Nuke.  I will give you some generalities here, and hopefully you will understand.   

First of all, the solution I will give you means you will have 2 user accounts or logins.  If you think about it, that is probably not a bad thing, especially when a user can log in "forever" on SMF.

I agree that SMF is far superior to phpBB, probably even more than you may realize.  Using SMF you can replace numerous modules, including:  News, Calendar, Stories, Topics, Story Archive, Forum, Private Messages, and Submit News.

OK....  upload the SMF files to a folder in the root of phpNuke, and maybe name it "smf".  Run the install ect.

Create a module named "forums" and put SMF in an Iframe.   Make the Iframe width=100% and height...  long enough where SMF appears without needing a scroll bar within your browser's scrollbar.  In the module index file you created, make sure to include header.php.  For me, I left out footer.php.  I did not see a reason to keep it for the module.

In your phpNuke theme, have the theme show NO blocks so SMF opens full browser width.

Using the SSI you can make a News module to display in the "Home" module of phpNuke.  You can also create a block for the forums using SSI.

Depending upon what SMF theme you use, you might want to comment out the header displayed in SMF.

I know this is a quick and dirty way, but it does work.

We need to finish up some things, but essentially it is all operational now.  We are testing some modules, etc. right now, and working on a new theme change from a block.

Yes, you only register and sign in once.  We dropped the entire PHP Nuke users table and only use the SMF members table.  Works pretty well actually.....   We have SSI.php being loaded in the mainfile.php which means SSI.php is available at all areas when needed.  Instead of doing cookie calls like Nuke does, we use SSI.  Works pretty well..... 

The Nuke code is W3C compliant, but it is not xhmtl transitionally compliant like SMF is.  We decided to release it like that with the intention of making it xhtml compliant in the next version.

Right now we will only have nuke themes that have NO CSS errors or warnings available for download.  We also plan to have only W3C blocks and modules in the downloads.

Hopefully we can release it next week, or sooner.
