"New Messages" icon not accurate when more than 1 new message present in boards

I've noticed this for quite some time.  It's not a major show stopper, but just an annoyance.  Here's what I see:
I log into my forum, and notice there are new messages on a certain Board (the new message icon indicates new messages).  I go into that Board and notice there is more than 1 message, which is ok.  If I read only 1 of the new messages, then return to the main menu, that Board no longer has the new message icon.  However, if I go into that board, the messages are still tagged 'new'.

Also, I'm at the latest/greatest version of SMF 1.1.8, with PHP Version 5.2.3, mysql Client API version    5.0.45

This is intentional.

The boardindex does not work off how many unread messages there are in the forum.
But whether there are new messages in that forum, once you go into it, it will then no longer show the new icon.
(Assuming that you have read all the topics that you want to in that forum)

Other forum software show unread board icons in accordance with the number of unread messages. Why SMF have own strange solution for this?

I see board icon 'off' and this icon have label - 'No New Posts', but board actually have new posts. It's wrong!

Really - it's not correct to show ammount of unread messages and new message flags like this. Maybe something wrong with coockies - i don't know. But it'll be great to fix this!
