"This Topic has been replied to" shown in first post when replies are made

Hi!

I would like to change my forum in such a way that only the first post (The start of each topic) is displayed when a guest views the boards.  Akabugeyes helped me with the code http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=193896.0 to do that BUT there is absolutely no indication on this first post that there are replies to the topic.  It just shows the "topic starter" and without an indication that there are hidden replies, a guest may end up thinking that my forum is dead...

I searched the entire site with the best key words I can think of but cannot seem to find out whether an answer exists.

This is my question:  Cahnging the code as akabugeyes suggested, how can I, as soon as a reply is made to the topic, have some wording (Like "This Topic has been replied to but you have to be a registered member to read the replies.") be displayed somewhere obvious - even within the first post or as a second post inserted between the original and the reply?

I thought I'll start here in case something exists and move it to the Mods section if it does not exist.

Thanks!

Harry

This is possible. All I would need is your Display.php and Display.template.php file.

Hi tyty1234!

That sounds good!  Thanks!  But pray tell; how do I get the files to you and can you please tell me what you have in mind?  I apologised for another topic that I started which eventually ended up as a double post.  It just seems as though all my ideas eventually get tangled up in one big topic. In case this may be of help, please refer to the latest topic I started over here:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=330937.0

This topic and the original one where akabugeyes assisted are somewhat different to this topic, but, as I said, they all seem to get tangled up eventually. ;D

Back to your response, though!  How do I get the files to you?  Do I paste the code for both here or is there a way to add as attachments (which I cannot see)?  And will you literally add words like "This topic has been replied to but only members are allowed to see the replies.  Please register if you want to see the replies." (or whatever) in some visually distinctive format at the end of post 1 as soon as reply 1 is made?

Thanks tyty1234!  :D

Simply attach both files to your post, and I will tell you what changes you will need to make. And if the changes I make succeed, I will probably package it up.

You know, tyty123, my dad quite philosophically tried to get me to always see when I look and always to hear when I listen...

Despite his teachings, I looked and re-looked and still missed the "Attach" section under the "Aditional Options"...   :-[  O boy.  "If it was a snake..."

Be that as it may, I also want to say thanks for replying to my other post.  I appreciate your keen intrest in having a go at this!

I attach the files requested.  The one named display_1.php is the one in which I used the code supplied by akabugeyes to limit display of topics to the first post for guests, in case that is the one you would want to use to reach my end goal:  not having guests see anything beyond post 1 - but with the warning discussed here.  The akabugeyes code starts at line 712 and ends at line 718 in that file.

I'm rooting for you! hehe - but what what else did you expect, eh?  ;D

Thanks for these Harryf, I'll be looking into these throughout the week.

Just a quick question, when you say "post 1" you are referring to the post that the author started right? And then all other posts in the topic are replies, and the first reply will be "reply 1" and the second....and so forth. And all you want is just "post 1" with the warning message if there are replies.

Yep, you have it spot on in the way you explain "post 1" and "reply 1", tyty123, as well as that I only want "post 1" plus the warning message to apply as soon as "reply 1" is made.  Before "reply 1" is made, for obvious reasons, there cannot be a warning message simply due to the fact that no replies have been made.

Thanks, again, for looking into it!

You gotta be kidding me! Incredible! Hee-ha! - and all those other jubilant, wide-eyed expressions writers use to express extreme joy caused by a sudden, unexpected answer to a problem one thought had no answer... :D  hehe - I feel like a kid again! :)

lol. I am feeling ecstatic as well! :D
You might also find my Disable Subject Change mod useful as well.

Also, I will be marking this topic as solved. :)

Thanks tyty123!  For marking it as solved, but more so for helping me with the answer.   :)

I could never really understand why people other than moderators would want to change the subject title (unless it is something like "help!!" - which in itself is clearly not helping readers figure out what help is needed for).  That should be left to moderators.  I think I'm going to install the other mod you referenced purely because I wouldn't like someone to change my subject line unless I ask for assistance about making it meaningful.  I would like to think that the members of my forum would think like that as well - but it's better to protect them from it happening, eh?

Oops - I just looked at it again - I am still on 1.1.9.  Your mod seem to be have been written for 2.0 onwards.  Will it work on 1.1.9?  ???

I will look into that this week as it doesn't work with SMF 1.1.x yet. :)

Tyty1234, the package warns that Modifications.turkish.php was not found in the Themes/default/languages folder and that I should not continue unless I know what I'm doing.

I don't know what I'm doing  :-\ - so could you please tell me what to do?  Do I ignore the warning and install/apply the mod or do I have to install a turkish language pack?  I'd prefer not doing it simply because of using server space for a language my forum members will not be using.

O! Before I forget - the link above does not work  :(.  I found the mod by doing a manual search for it on the mod site  :D

Thanks!

hehe - you're forgiven! :D But what do I do about "the Turkish thing"?  Ignore the warning?
