[2 rc1.2] boardindex doesn't show last post from (very) nested board

hi,

Can someone confirm (or not!) this bug?

I have a somewhat nested hierarchy:
category1 > board1 > subboard1 > subboard2

The problem is that messages that get posted in subboard2 don't show up in the "last message" paragraph at the bottom of the home screen. They do show up everywhere else though, like, right next to board1 in the home screen, where it says "last message by (user) at (date).

P.S. If I go to the control panel and select to recount all statistics, then they do show up correctly on the home screen.

I can replicate this behavior (the "last post" not reported on the main board index if it's in such a grand-child board) on a SMF 2.0 RC1.2.
Also, if the only message is one in "subboard2", then the boards "board1" and "subboard 1" appear as having "0 topics, 0 posts".

I'm not sure this behavior is intended or it's rather buggy, but I think that creating such a deep tree structure is rather going to decrease clarity and navigability for users, regardless of the statistics updating. I'd say it should be avoided if possible.
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

This is INTENDED.  SMF will only go ONE-level deep for the last post.
This is to avoid the resource usage that going further down would cause.

Especially when people may want to go
Board > Child > Grandchild > Great Grandchild, Great Great Grandchild, Great Great Great Grandchild etc...

(Note it will count the totals correctly, its just the last post that will not change)

why not add an option or a mod for people who want to create many sub forums?

so everyone will be happy, especially since phpbb/ipb/vbulletin have this possibilty, why not in smf ?

Really, such imbricated boards make it hard for some people to browse and understand what news happened in the forum, in such an (invisible) multi-level structure. Mostly, information should be as much at hand as possible, and hiding it in such a deep tree makes it harder for people to find. Not everybody likes to keep browsing and entering levels and getting out again and so on, just to be able to see a list of posts.

On another note, perhaps you could ask for what feature you have in mind at the Mod Requests board.
