Problem entering long posts with IE7 and IE8

Hi,

We're using SMF 2.0 RC1.2. Some forum members complain that when they reply-quote or type long posts the input window jumps to the top after each character is entered. This makes it very difficult to type coherently.

I've suggest they use the drag bar at the bottom of the input field to make the input window larger (and thus eliminate the jumping), but I'd like to know if there is something I can do via settings to make this problem go away.

Thanks,

Boot.

This is a known IE8 bug, please check out: [3354][IE8] Problems with text box scroller/cursor moving.

A work around has been found for SMF 2.0 RC2, though.

I'd forgotten all about the logs...

It took a bit of filtering, but after removing all the obvious log messages, I am left with 6 that are all of the same type:

8: Undefined index: label  (4 times)
8: Undefined index: href
8: Undefined index: title

No smoking gun there I don't believe.

If I understood the problem correctly, the jumping box in IE has nothing to do with your forum and not even with SMF: may web applications out there complain about this IE bug. Please check the above link, and eventually the discussion you find about it in the Bug Tracker as well (linked in the topic).

Can we see the full errors please.

Looking more closely, the errors are all the same, complaining about undefined labels...

8: Undefined index: label
File: /hsphere/local/home/kodiak/hairymonkeyclan.com/forums/cache/lang_ManageSettings_english_darkbreak_20rc1.php (generic_menu_sidebar_above sub template - eval?)
Line: 306

8: Undefined index: title
File: /hsphere/local/home/kodiak/hairymonkeyclan.com/forums/Themes/default/Login.template.php (body_above sub template - eval?)
Line: 365

8: Undefined index: href
File: /hsphere/local/home/kodiak/hairymonkeyclan.com/forums/Themes/default/Login.template.php (body_above sub template - eval?)
Line: 365

We're using DarkBreak by DzinerStudios. Maybe I'll post the first error on their forums and see what's up.

Thanks for the link Norv.

That was a bit of a read there. I'm surprised I didn't find that thread with my search "internet explorer jumping", but as usual, no matter how good Google is, the collective mind is better.

Anyway, if I've read it right, it seems that I should tell my members to use IE7 compatibility mode setting they'll find to the right of the address bar until we upgrade the forums to RC2. Problem is that one of my members says they are at IE7 and having this problem, but perhaps they're wrong?

I use Chrome myself and am quite happy with it.

Thanks,

Something like this perhaps:

I think so.

Selecting the "Compatibility View" mode of IE8 eliminated the problem of wonky input window behavior.

A note of caution: Don't press the button in the middle of a long unsaved post, since it will clear the text input window and no amount of page-back or page-forward will recover your lost text!

I have seen this as well in IE7 and IE8.

I wonder if there are any plans to fix it?

Looks JavaScript-y.

Arantor

It's not a Javascript bug. It's an IE8 bug. The only workarounds that there were seem to have been broken in later patches to IE8.
Holder of controversial views, all of which my own.
