Hi there,

I have created a new smf 1.1.10 forum and I am having a problem when I try and write a new topic that is longer than the window provided. As soon as I reach the bottom of the white typing area the scrollbar jumps back up and I can't see what I'm typing. Every extra space or character I type is out of view and even if I manually drag the scroll bar down it won't allow me to write my message without jumping back.

I went to posts and topics and set the maximum allowed post size to '0', it was set at '20000', but this doesn't seem to have done the trick.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you using IE 8?

There is a known problem with IE 8 (and most of the web seems to have it because it's an IE 8 bug)

You can fix it for yourself by using Compatibility View, or fix it for all IE 8 users with a minor edit to one of the PHP files in SMF. Let me know if you'd like guidance on this.

Wow, that was quick!!

Yes I am using IE 8 and clicking compatibility view has fixed the glitch, thanks so much for that.

If you could let me know which PHP file and what I need to edit it within it so that no-one else experiences this problem that would be brilliant, cheers.  :)

Find your theme's index.template.php file (if you're using the default theme, it's Themes/default/index.template.php)

Early on in the file you'll see several entries that start with <meta

Add this before the other <meta entries:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

donigedzo: Remove that edit for now. Does it work correctly in IE8 if you enable Compatibility View?

Arantor

Compatibility View is usually enabled from the icon that looks like a broken piece of paper in IE8, next to the address bar.

yes it works, but what about others
like not everyone knows about this

Arantor

Yes, I realise that. But I had to determine whether what exactly was the problem. The reason you got issues is because the edit you made possibly wasn't in the correct place.

Please re-edit the file and upload here as an attachment (using the Reply button, followed by the Additional Options) so we can see exactly what is the problem.

ok here it is from the theme, un-edited.
btw. this is 2.0 version, i hope there is no problem ?

#11
did you create this smf ?:D
it works
thank you allot you saved my life :D
offtopic: please can you tell me if there is a way removing the colum where "last posts" are shown .because i have another issue that these colums get out of frame when the window is minimized cause of my pictures added to the categorie description.
or where can i edit the % space that the template leaves when the ie window get norower

Arantor

I didn't create SMF, but I do help on supporting it.

For the other changes, it might be worth asking in Graphics and Templates about it, since they may have better ideas on how to approach that, both resizing the column and removing the 'last post' link.

Please can you help :( i dont know whats the problem

Ask the people who made your theme. They need to fix it for Internet Explorer.
