I really could do without this sort of thing, just awoke to the website down, after a quick search I found settings.php to be empty, how in hells name can a file empty itself???  >:(

Well, your server may have been hacked. So what exactly is the problem now? Have you sorted the settings yet?

There is actually a nasty bug that when Settings.php gets updated a second time before it finishes the first, it will empty out.

Simply copy Settings_bak.php into a new file and rename it Settings.php

I have it working but would prefer it did not do it again.

Yes, it is a nasty bug that I have submitted a bug report for. Two choices to fix it once and for all:

1) http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=213201.0 . These are the code fixes to isolate the rewrite upon database error to just a one line file.

2) chmod 444 Settings.php. This will freeze the file and keep it from being updated. Don't forget to chmod 644 the file if you need to change anything in it, or upload a new version.

Cheers, 444 is the easiest trick.
