Those forums hosted by those people look really much like SMF, but there are no Simple Machines copyrights. Also the images in their "tour" could prove that the software they use IS SMF. Could you people please investigate this? Do they have a permission to remove the SMF copyright, if that is Simple Machines?

PS. Do not flame the old me who posted so much useful stuff in the YaBB SE forums. Thank you.

It is known about and was being discussed by the project managers with the owner of the site.

They did it without permission and then were slow and stalling in terms of working toward a solution.  I think Joseph was dealing with it since then, them paying us to remove the copyrights, but I'm not exactly sure whatever happened with that.  But yes, they did violate our license and chose to ignore it; not a company I'd want to be dealing with.

I've been an Xsorbit customer for several years now and since October 2004 I've  had Xsorbit X5 board which IS obviously SMF software adapted slightly. Now, after reading several posts here,  I'm concerned  about using illegitimate product.

However, looking over Xsorbit site closely I found today the following:

Design

To create X5, Xsorbit formed a strategic partnership with Simple Machines; Simple Machines is a recognized leader in software development and through our partnership, they provide Xsorbit exceptional technology, with the scalability we require to provide reliable service to our customers.

Is this true?

I would appreciate very much some clarification...

I'll be moving my board to SMF anyway, but I would prefer to do it because SMF has a product I prefer and not because I don't wish to deal with questionable individuals...

Thank you

The situation has changed and we have an agreement.  The statements David made, as far as I know, were mistaken - although he was not made aware of the agreement as he perhaps should have.

I have not really dealt with the people at XSorbit directly, but my understanding is that they are not questionable individuals.

i saw them a while back. didnt post about it, because i assumed that the developers knew...

what i find funny, is that they charge up to $ 799.00 monthly for a standard SMF board. Wow.

The only thing php can't do is tell you how much milk is left in the fridge.

To be fair, they also offer the hosting of course - and you can begin to pay quite a good chunk of money every month for such hosting either way.

Thank you kindly...  I feel much better now...  :)

To clarify the fees, I pay Xsorbit right now $60/year for not 'hosting' my board per se, but actually maintaining my humble little board for me on their server. This includes fixing all the problems and looking after all the 'parse errors' created at http://xsorbit26.com/users5/torontogsdrescue.  I only have an access to templates and CSS.

I have no idea what I would be getting for $799/month...  ::)

I also have one FREE board with them at http://xsorbit27.com/users5/neighboursfromhell/index.php

Last fall it would cost me an extra $9/month to add SMF Forum to my website hosted elsewhere.  I also did not feel confident enough to install it and set it up myself at that time.

Right now, my WebHosting Comp upgraded its servers and has all 'requirements' necessary to run SMF at no extra cost.

I was able to install SMF 1.0.5 and successfully import one of my old 'backup' files following all great instructions I found here. http://www.torontogsdrescue.org/OurForum/index.php

I have a problem now with 'importing' the current data to replace what I've got there now.

I'm going to look for answers, hopefully I won't need to bother you too much...

I'll probably need to delete/uninstall everything and start over again...   :-\

Thank you again

well, you could, spend your money much more wisely, by getting hosting from someone, like siteground.com, which offers a free domain with each hosting package, it's the same price, you have access to everything, freedome to do anything you want with your webspace, rather than only being able to have one smf board.

You should change the copyright back to smf's. Just to piss them off.  :P

Hmm, I have some competition. Thats good. I wonder how much they are paying to remove the copyright. It is better to keep the SMF copyright though it helps promote the software.

Well they may have me beat on the website, need to hire someone to do it better.

But I think I have a better system  ;)  Time to start coding some mods heh.  Maybe I will do a subscription mod, seems like a good way to bring people in.

Yes, Tipmaster, I'm moving my board to where my regular website is hosted right now and hopefully I'll be able to integrate it all together...

At the moment I'm totally overwhelmed by all the possibilities...  reading all this material here is like opening a new world... I love it...

Nah... not worth my effort, I have no idea how to do it... :D and I'm not wasting my time to learn it...

This WAS bothering me, didn't really want to change the copyright, but I added SMF banner and the info on SMF/X5 at the bottom of my Xsorbit boards... not much, but  fair is fair...

I used to use Xsorbit, until they tried to squeeze me for loads of cash for a simple mod. I'm trying to spread a bit of education about the situation at my rant page [nofollow]

I'm using SMF now, and can't believe I even bothered with Xsorbit's crippled version of the software.
