I am unable to change my prefix, can I still install a second forum?

Reason being my host sets the prefix, and I can create multiple databases ... but they all have the same prefix.

I am opening a second course, and need a separate community forum, all is under the same domain

thanksin advance

I don't know what you mean by prefix but if you can create folders and databases then you should be able to do this no problem.

awesome

By default when i create a db,  it will be my account username ex.

domain_(I can choose this)

When i go to manually install SMF, and hit the install page,  it has a prefix section, and states used for multiple installations or something like that.... and to not install smf with the sam db prefix....  but the way I see it... different directory, different db... should work,  just wanted to verify.

thanks

That is if you are installing two different forums to the same database, not to the same space on your server. One forum can be like this:

www.yoursite.com

and the other can be

www.yoursite.com/forum

or whatever you name it. If you have the ability to create subdomains then you can also do that for two different ones.

If this is solved can you mark it as such please. :)

Hey Bigguy, I'm a newbie and someone directed me to this thread.

In a perfect world I want to have several separate installs on DIFFERENT different domains sharing the same SMF database for login info.

Example:
DomainA.com (forum in that root)
DomainB.com (forum in that root)
DomainC.com (forum in that root)

Someone signs up on DomainA.com's forum? BLAM, they can login to DomainB.com's forum if they want, as well as DomainC.com, etc (No one wants to register for 2 or 3 forums...just one!)

Re: your use of subdomains, is there a way to pull this off in the sense that it APPEARS the installs/forums are on separate domains (in a root location) when they are in fact on the same one?

I want to be able to customize each subdomain forum as well as its theme so it looks like it is on the root of a specific domain (instead of simply being in some "/forum" folder. Obviously I can't have the same name and theme for each!

I was thinking of maybe a 'database master' install in the root that is somehow integrated with the various subdomain forum installs, but how would I make those subdomains installs appear as if they were on their own separate domains (in the root of each)? This is probably not possible, huh?

Any advice? I am a relative newbie with my own LAMP server and trying to think outside the box
I'm Feeling This!

There is or was a mod for for doing what you want. I suggest you look at the mod site.
