Using WordPress themes in SMF - Beta testers needed

Hi,
I've written a WordPress plugin which allows you to use your WordPress theme in your SMF site and need a few bug testers for when it's released. It's not ready for testing right now, but it should be by tomorrow (I just have the instructions left to write).

EDIT: Alpha version has now been launched:
http://pixopoint.com/theme-integrator-alpha-launch/

When it's running, you can have your WordPress header, footer and even your sidebar in your SMF theme. When you move widgets around in WordPress, you will see the changes in your SMF site.

It works by adding some HTML markers into your WP theme, then add a couple of require( ... ) statements into your SMF theme. It's not 100% user friendly, but it's as good as I can get without doing some serious regex/guess work.

It may also be possible to add some of this stuff in via a MOD rather than users having to manually modify their SMF theme. So if you read this, and know a little about writing SMF MOD's let me know and I'm happy to help you write something. I don't have the foggiest idea how to make an SMF MOD but I can at least explain how the system works so you can write the MOD accordingly.

Thanks :)

PS: You can see it in action on my own forum ... http://pixopoint.com/forum/

looks ok, just fix the menu css

There's nothing wrong with the menus CSS. It was an HTML problem caused by the plugin not processing the markup correctly.

FYI, for anyone following this topic. This project will be continued, but I won't be actively supporting SMF due to the death of the SMF community ... http://tinyurl.com/jksdghusfsdf

Hey, I was just trying to do the same thing, looks like you have it working. I am willing to test it out was well, where can I go to get some instructions on installing it?

I would like to let you know ryanhellyer that SMF isn't going anywhere, and it certainly isn't dieing :) There are some issues and they are being taken care of. Like it says in the top of that blog post:
QuoteEDIT: As of 10:30pm EST tonight, there is already a lot of discussion taking place on some of these issues. Needless to say this is fantastic to hear and hopefully things can be worked out and back on track. Will update later as more comes in...
All projects have some bumps in the road.

That's one hell of a big bump :P

@allsports - flick me an email and I'll make sure I get in touch once it's ready. I've been distracted with paying work and haven't quite got the finishing touches ironed out yet. Hopefully I'll get to it within the next week or so.

very nice integration on your website.

Thanks :)

It was driving me nuts having to update my SMF theme every time I modified my menu via the admin panel in WordPress, plus I wanted any plugin updates I did in WordPress to work in SMF as well rather than having to do theme modifications just to hack them into working each time. It seems to be working well so far :)

I've been tied up with paying work lately and I've just been inundated so I'm probably not going to polish off this system ready for beta testing for about a week now sorry.

That plugin will be great!

I had to port my wordpress theme to smf. Huge work...

Any news on the development?

ryanhellyer

I'm bogged down with paying work right now. Everyone decided they wanted custom dropdown menus all at once :P

Don't rely on this helping to port your theme. This requires just as much effort to get working as it would the old fashioned way. It just allows you to dynamically grab the HTML instead of relying on manual copy and pasting, so semi-dynamic content can be regularly copied over including plugins which load stuff in the header/footer areas.

Your forum still doesn't match exactly. If you can't get it working by copy and pasting, then this new system will not improve that. It still requires some basic HTML/CSS knowledge and modification of your theme files (both SMF and WordPress).

New beta release with lots of usability improvements to save having to dive through code all the time, figure out server paths etc.

I don't understand your manual to install the plugin. U have to be more specific and make a step-by-step. I think the plugin is for people use it!

Other thing, put the code in the index.template.php I give me me this error.
Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/xpto/public_html/wp-content/uploads/pixopoint-theme-integrator/chunk1' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php') in /home/xpto/public_html/forum/Sources/Load.php(2094) : eval()'d code on line 156
