Hello everyone, I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, if it is not can a mod please move it.

I have installed SMF 2.0 RC2 several time before and modded it to no end without an issue. I also have used phpBB, MyBB, IPB, and vB so I am not a n00b when it comes to forum scripts. In fact with phpBB, every single mod I have ever done was by hand and not using AutoMOD.

That being said, I recently installed a copy of SMF and started setting up the board. I installed a skin, set up every setting and membergroup, etc. However, when I try to install SimplePortal or any other mod, I get the famous
QuoteYou cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!
.
After doing some quick research on Google, I made a folder called "temp" and cmodded it to 777. The packages install, but don't work. SimplePortal for example says it is installed and no admin options appear not does it appear on the board. When I try to uninstall it, every test fails (because no new code exists?)

Doing further research, I discovered it COULD be an issue with ownerships. Before I drive the host nuts (it is not a standard host), I would like if someone could verify it for me please. I attached my phpinfo to this post and if someone is will to take a look and needs Admin access to the forums, please shoot me a PM.

I found this thread and tried everything. I ran fix_ownership.php too.

Thank you very much for your help, looking forward to solving this problem.

P.S. I know a lot of you are going to say "Ask for help at SimplePortal", but this is not only a SimplePortal issue, it is a board issue as none of the mods I have used on any site want to install.

Yeah, I did that when I first installed SMF.

I looked at your phpinfo file and this is most likely your issue.  Your host has this installed:

mod_security2

If they won't disable it you might want to think about a new host.

Alright, I will let the host know and post back if that solves my issues.

You know, I was looking for that. Thank you for the information. After they do it, I will come back here and mark it solved or ask if there is still an issue...

Be sure and let us know what they say.  The information might help some other folks.

This has been resolved. The host disabled mod_security (thanks for the tip) but we still had issues. I asked the host to clear the database and i started from scratch. Now the manager works.
