I often get some problems regarding my hosting, my forum frequently gets down for 2-3 weeks, every 2 or 3 months.
Now i am willing to move my forum to another web host.
Please tell which are the files that are necessary.
Total size its showing 342MB, i can download those files to my PC, but while uploading it would be great hassle.
Please can you tell me how to move the forum with ease..

Thanks in advance.

Peace...

Furthermore, after transferring the files and database you'll want to run repair_settings.php, to make sure all of the paths are correct.

What is repair_settings.php?

Sad_Angel

 Thanks cicka for reply,
Yes, i read that doc. but the procedure involves downloading and re-uploading those files to new host..
downloading is ok, but uploading..it will be terrible with this ADSL connection..

Is there any other method, such as server to server transfer, etc..
Peace...

Matthew K.

No Sad_Angel, there is not. The only way to transfer SMF is "client-side", downloading and re-uploading.

If this is practically impossible for you to do, you could post in the Help Wanted board?

Sad_Angel

That 342MB will upload correctly.?
Peace...

Sad_Angel

Hey anyone please reply....
my forum is down since 3 weeks...

Thanks...

Sad_Angel, you have to download and upload database to new host to make your forum works.
The only thing that comes to my mind now is to ask your new hosting company if they can transfer your files or database to new host if you give them admin data. I know that some companies does that, so try it.
Itherwise, you have to upload it by yourself.

Regards.

Sad_Angel

OK thanks for reply,
What are those CORE files, i can see 4 such big files, are they topics and posts of forum?
Peace...

Norv

No, they are not useful normally. You don't need to copy those.

The .core files contain debug information when your host's php engine crashed... You really don't need them, eventually they (your host's support) may use them to see what happened, if they're interested.
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

Rest everthing needs to upload..?
can i reduce size by not downloading packages and backup & installing it later once i migrate to new host..?
Peace...

Why don't you ask your new host to transfer your data from the old host? Once you can grab a backup copy from your old host, the new host can transfer it directly onto their server using wget. That should speed up most of the things and also save lots of energy.

@MordyT
Please open your thread in "Help Available" before you offer anyone your paid services in SMF and do not offer your services unless asked for. I have removed your forum link from the post.

This is definitely worth looking into if you have not completed the transfer.  Not all host will do this but some will.

If this is solved please mark it solved by clicking the Mark Topic Solved link at the bottom left of the page.
