Heys,

I'm a n00b to this whole forum thing, and would like peoples ideas on which forum is better to use and operate. my site is hxxp:www.edibleonline.com [nonactive] and its only been up for a week, and i don't know if it would matter or not to change. So I'm just wanting to know if it is beneficial to change over to SMF.

If you have changed from phpBB to SMF, and thinks its great could you please tell me. lol

This topic: If you changed from phpBB... has a lot about why people switched from phpBB to SMF. It may help you understand why a lot of people here prefer SMF over phpBB.

I'm surprised you would ask a question like that here... don't you realize you would get a very biased opinion?

Hi Edible. I have a pretty large host, LunarPages and today I found an email from them advising all members to change from phpBB to SMF. Their advice stems from the many, many attacks phpBB has had, so much in fact that people are just not keeping up with the security upgrades and this is compromising the security of the LunarPages servers.  In fact, Lunar have written a script to show them who of their customers have not upgraded and those who haven't will get an email telling them to comply within 24 hours or have their forum shut down.

Welcome, to SMF. :-)

That's true!
I've been using both for a while.
SMF is far ahead in terms of core features, stability and security.
If you're obsessed with doing lots and lots of specific mods on your board or require certain types of things, then phpbb does have a huge array of ready made mods available to tweak your board at your hearts content. But the downside is that they may not be secure, or raise incompatabilities. You'll end up spending a lot of time messing around and only worth it if that's what you like doing.
That's not to say you can't tweak smf also and you get very good support here. Basically if you want a solid, well featured, user friendly board that works straight out the box, then its SMF

An almost unbiased opinion  ;D

IMO SMF has more functions than phpBB and has a much more friendlier support team

edible

thanks for ur speedy replies, seems much better support team here! think SMF is right choice

I used to think phpBB was better because I never used SMF before. I didn't liek the way you installed MODS on phpBB and the whole look of it really wasn't right. So I tried out SMF and found out, in my personal opinion, it was much better. Especially adding hacks and customizing it to my liking.

Hi there

I used phpbb ages ago and though it looked impressive I eventually decided it wasn't what I needed at the time. It also integrated badly with my mambo system.

I switched to a more streamlined forum (simpleboard for mambo) and then recently, after a year or so I changed to smf.

All I can say is I am very excited to have found this forum software. The forum looks fabulous, its very user-friendly for both members and admin and the community is awesome. The forum seems to have all the features I need (so far) and it was so incredibly easy to convert my old forum members and messages to this one - I was gob-smacked!!  ;D

I have no idea what phpbb is like now, but having found smf I am so far happy to leave it that way.

Good luck :)

I'm hosted by lunarpages also and made the change this weekend.  I used the coverter without any real problems.  It did take some tweaking of the index.template.php and style.css files.  Not too bad though.  If you are comfortable with making minor changes, you shouldn't have a problem making the change from phpbb to smf.

I like this board very much even if I am strill not finish to tune it for the road run,
I had tried bbphp then before I could even finish to set it up I received a message from my hosting service saying that there was a severning securtity alertand to upgrade the last version, the weird is that I have had installed just the latest...so I had no clue at all. I took it apart and I found this one! I just love it....

thought, while this post is quite odd but really nice I wish to come up with a different question....
What are the bigger differences within SM and vBULLETIN and IPB, not for the cost OF COURSE since SM will shure beat the other to hand down because it is , surprislyng free....but functionality I mean.

I am very interested to ear you opinion, and I hope to receive plenty feedbacks, I am in another "waht the best forum to use" on another board, and I would report your comment there .

thanks all!

I too am with Lunar Pages, and with all the updating I was having to do with phpbb2 I deceided to try smf.  I find that smf is a lot easier to update and to add mods.  However I find that there are not as many mods as phpbb2 and I find working with the user or member security is not as simple as phpbb2.  I sure over time I will get the hang of the security with smf and this forum has been a great help with that.  Overall I am happy with smf and will stick with it.

I wasn't liking some of the features in SMF and was thinking of switching to phpBB until I read SMF 1.1 Public Beta 3 was out so I'm using it now and all the things I hated were gone. So now I'm settled on SMF.
