Several problems

Hi all.

I have been struggling my way through setting up my forum for the last 12 months or so and trying hard to learn as I go.

From nothing UK Best Bet has started to grow into a nice friendly community and I would like to sort out a few issues so that I can keep my loyal members happy.
Although poker and betting based the forum does not make money as yet and maybe never will but I treat it like my hobby and the cost of running it the same.

Now the problems.

I have had issues with my index template and today managed to lose the forum all together. Somehow I found and uploaded a new one, called it template1 and I now have my forum back. (ok easy for you guys but I was quite proud of managing it  :D )

I have several mods installed and have blank spaces in my admin/permissions

There are also mods with no uninstall option.

and I get error messages when trying to uninstall some of the mods. I thought that if I went back to no or nearly no mods and reinstalled them 1 by 1 I could find what is causing the problem. Thing is I don't want to uninstall with error messages.

Here is 1 of them.

If anyone has the time to help please let me know how to go about it.

Thanks.

Chris.

Hi   :)

Do you still have the template file you removed, you can't just replace it with a vanilla copy of that file, as all the edits that have been made to that file by mods, etc will be lost.

Neither can you give files different names from what they were originally.

If you can put your forum back how it was before you "Fixed" it, then show us the errors we should be able to help you out.

The template file now named "template1" is an exact copy of the original.
I had problems before and lost the forum and someone went into my account for me and created "template0" so I now have template, template0 and template1.

The forum works fine now re posting etc and all is at it was before I did whatever it was I did to lose it a little earlier.

I basically need to remove the packages and get back to a basic forum and see if my admin/permissions page are then as they should be.

So no I can not put it back to how it was before my "fix"

I dare not touch anything at the moment without someone on my shoulder telling me what to do.

I would get a 1.1.12 large upgrade zip from here  http://download.simplemachines.org/

Save it to your desktop, unzip it, then use the files it contains to overwrite the files on your server except for "attachments" & "avatars"

Then run the upgrade by browsing to  ...................

http://yoursitesname.com/upgrade.php

This will give you a clean set of files to work with, without losing any information in your database.

BACKUP FIRST !!!

So I keep my members and posts etc this way and just lose any mods and changes to the theme that I have made?

See I really am a total novice..  :)

Correct !

Do Backup your database before proceeding.

cryptic3

Ok Thanks, I have backed up and will try it when I have my best thinking head on..

cryptic3

One more question before I take what for me will be a huge step.

Is it feasible that I can delete/edit the mods that won't uninstall without errors?

Thanks.

Paul_Pauline

The large upgrade will remove all your mods completely , there is no need to do anything before running it  ;)

Just had a look at doing this and I have bottled it....

Anyone fancy walking me through it please..

I dont like it when I click a file to upload say "packages" and it goes into "backups", then "htaccess...

Oh to hell with it I spose if I upload each part of each file then it will be ok as long as I replace the original ones...

fingers crossed..  :)

Maybe not there's like a million files...

There's no way I will be able to keep track of what I am doing there, my concentration span is very short and I have some memory problems.

So I need help please if someone has time..

Thanks..

Paul_Pauline

Hiya.

You don't need to unpack the individual folders !

I take it you have de-archived the upgrade zip, you can discard the "attachment" & "avatar" folders as you want to keep your originals.

The rest of the folders and files can just be used as they are, highlight them all and select upload, you will be asked if you want to overwrite existing files with the same name, select yes to all, and sit and wait till they have finished transferring over, then run the upgrade.

cryptic3

Ok, I go into file manager?

Then when I highlight it opens each folder and I can not highlight all folders.

Remember I know nothing as Manuel would say...

Paul_Pauline

To be honest, I have no idea how filemanager works, I always use an ftp client (Filezilla) when working with files.

Hi.

I've asked someone to take a look at this topic   ;)

Firstly, Cryptic, you REALLY want to get into FTP, if you can. It's about a zillion times easier than FileManager, for one.

If you're now thinking something like

Don't, coz it's really easy, once you get the hang of what's what. In many ways, it's quite similar to Windows Explorer.

That having been said, if you want someone to take a look at this, for you, whilst you're familiarising yourself with FTP, if you PM me your FTP details, I'll be glad to have a look.

I'm assuming you know those, because you need them for Package manager to do it's stuff.

If not, your CPanel details would be enough, coz I can create a temporary FTP account, there.

Thing is, my house is in bits, at the moment...

If Monday'd be OK,with you, I could take a look then.

How's that sound?

PS. Do you know someone with the username Caliope? Real name Barry?

He's an English Poker freak. ;)

cryptic3

K@ thanks a million I really would be grateful of your help.

I have downloaded Filezilla and actually think I could manage to use it if I could get it to blooming well connect...

That said maybe it would be better if you would have a look at my files as I am sure they are a total mess and in need of some expert editing.

Basically I want to keep my forum look as it is, colours and images but get rid of the mods as they or at least 1 of them is causing the problem in my admin/permissions section where I have huge gaps, over lapping indexes and check boxes with no writing by them.

Maybe you could have a look around the forum as well, if you join I will change your settings to admin so you can see what my problems are.

I will pm you my msn and skype so that you can let me know when you are around and have time to help..

No I don't know Caliope real name Barry that I am aware of, maybe he can come and join in our exclusive games and comps on UK Best Bet  ;)

Thanks again

Chris

...I can see from your attachment over on Project Snow there's a (file-wise) language problem.

What language is your forum? I'd guess english UTF-8.

I see K@ is on the case. He'll know how to sort all this out.  :)

Ta, Yogi!

I have ftp sorted. :)

I'll get on it as soon as i get the chance.

My house is like a bomb-site, at the moment.... :(
