I post a copy of our weekly Church Bulletin online
there is a new topic for each week
embedded is a link to the url for the pdf (eg " . . . month/week.pdf")
if they click the link - they can read in the browser
OR
I also Attached the PDF file to the Topic Post
and the reader can Download and read later
here is my question - (suggestion)
the SMF uploads change the name of the file to some obscure name
(which prevents me from linking to it directly - ergo - I have to also upload via my FTP program)
seems redundant and wasteful

suggestions ??

Arantor

It's done for good reason. Previously it was an option to be able to have unencrypted filenames, except there was a case where PHP files were being uploaded and then called - providing a hacker with direct access to your server! -  which can't be fixed without modifying the filename.

You know, you can just link to the attachment itself (provided that attachments are open to guests)

TheDragon

ok - I understand - I think  :P (about the php part)

more data - I am the only one permitted to add attachments
(and I trust myself)

and - HOW do I link to the attachment ? if I do not know its name
. . . guess I just look in my FTP and match the date?
but when I tried to do that - I got an error code
so I said -  hah ! and I changed the file name to xxxxx.pdf
and still got this error code

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

so -  any suggestions ?
this is not a big deal - each file is only 2-5 Mb -
but still trying to be an 'efficient' WebMaster and not have to upload 2x

Arantor

To link to it, attach it normally and then right click on the link and copy it that way.

Do you allow uploaded avatars? They carry the same security risk...

TheDragon

thanks - figured it out = BUT does not work as desired
my way = a link to the pdf file and when it is clicked - it opens the pdf reader in the browser and the user can view the file online
your way = yes - does eliminate the need to upload 2x = Thanks = but it opens the dialogue box Save/Open and even if select 'Open'
it still DL to the user's computer then opens with the user own version of Acrobat

my code

again - thanks for you suggestions so far  !

Arantor

You're actually better pushing it to download, since otherwise it has to be resent every time anyway which defeats the purpose of saving bandwidth...
