Introduction to layout develepment?

Hello guys!

I'm really new to SMF.
I chose SMF and not phpBB for example, because I was told that SMF is pretty easily adaptable to one's own layout.

Now my installation is running and I am looking for some documentation on how to combine my website layout with SMF, but where is some?
There seem to be no tutorials (the link "Tutorials" is leading the the support main-page) or similar documents...

Do I have to build my own theme, to adjust the layout of SMF?
