Oops, I posted this in the last thread on this topic (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=369532.0), then realised it had been marked as "solved" despite that there was no apparent solution. So deleted the post there and putting it up as a new topic.

There is some kind of workaround that spammers regularly try on our 2.0 site, there are 164 of errors like the following extract since I last deleted the error log 6 weeks ago, any idea how to stop these cluttering it up? In the same time we have had 12 "proper" errors also, being incorrect passwords by members who did manage to remember them and post so they weren't spammers.

In Members Registration Settings I have now unticked "Allow users to register using OpenID" since it is inferred elsewhere this could be a methodology whereby these spammers are attempting to get in and generating the error. If so this would appear to be a bug. Given that it is only every few days that a spammer has a crack at this I won't know if it is the answer or not for a while.

My guess is that it won't be the answer as most likely these are attempts to log on via OpenID and deleting the registration option won't make any difference. If I could find an option to log on via OpenID I would delete it too but so far my searching of the Wiki, docs & forum haven't found it for me, nor can I find the sucker (should it exist) by trolling around the options.

How frequently do these errors come?

This sort of thing was covered in an announcement a few months ago here at simplemachines.org:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=422954.0

Does the information in that post help you?

Deleting the OpenID register option stopped the issue in its tracks. Or more accurately, in the last three weeks since I did this there have been no new errors of this type. Does that mean this should become a bug report? I am happy to do further diagnostic / proving work if required.

The frequency was "every few days" at which time 4 or 5 typically would turn up. As mentioned 164 errors in 6 weeks, so I am thinking 3 weeks clear is a proven resolution.

I don't know much about this issue. So I don't know if "The requested identifier did not return the proper information" means there was some kind of bug in SMF, or if it simply means that this was an invalid OpenID attempt (a similar error message to "invalid password").

If you think this is a bug, please go ahead and make a bug report. Either it represents a bug, or else you would like a feature enhancement, to make this error message more informative.

Very sensible, I put it up here http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=453035 as a feature request as that is the more polite way for a somewhat confused amateur to raise the topic, although whatever exactly is going on it is more in the housekeeping / bug box I suspect. However, if that is the case, somebody that knows more than both of us will move it!

That seems like a good idea.  I'll see if it catches on with the development team.
I'm marking this one "solved", here. If this is not correct, please mark it 'not solved'.

Thanks!
