I had to manually change the file and folder permissions to 777 but when I ran install.php the following error appeared:

"A file permissions error has occurred. Please check the permissions on the script and the directory it is in and try again".

This php file is located in the root of smf.

Please try changing its permissions to 755.

Changed permission from 777 to 755 and reran install.

Error now reads:

"This installer was unable to find the installer's language file or files. They should be found under:

/smf/Themes/default/languages

In some cases, FTP clients do not properly upload files with this many folders. Please double check to make sure you have uploaded all the files in the distribution.

If that doesn't help, please make sure this install.php file is in the same place as the Themes folder."

There are 21 files under /smf/Themes/default/languages and the install.php file is in the same place as the Themes folder.

You may need to make them 755, although that shouldn't usually be necessary.

Can you post a phpinfo, please?  What is phpinfo.php?

hxxp:www.waggoners.co.uk/phpinfo.php [nonactive]

404 http://www.waggoners.co.uk/smf/Themes/default/Install.english.php

This seems to exist, however:

http://www.waggoners.co.uk/smf/themes/default/

But Themes is important, so you need to rename that directory.

I have discovered that my FTP client converts ALL uppercase letters to lowercase letters.  I have changed themes to Themes and install.english.php to Install.english.php and rerun install.php and it now asks for the install path.  I have left the server as 'localhost' on port 21.

I have tried every combination I can think of for the install path but the error returned is always the same.
Unable to connect to FTP server with this combination of details.

This information is not to be found in the installation guide at http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6765.0

Just in case any of you reading this thread wondered what the answer was.

I found that leaving the name of the server as localhost did not work for me.  I had to use hxxp:ftp.domainname.com [nonactive]

Similarly, the install path is the same as your ftp client says it is.  In my case it was /public_html/

And again, likewise, the username and password are identical to those you use to login to your own ftp client.

I could not find any of this information in the installation guide I previously referred to and clearly the moderator has been otherwise engaged.

Hopefully my trials and tribulations will help you.
