Users can't log in after conversion

I've got a huge problem... it seems as though users can not log in to my site after a conversion from phpBB3.  When they attempt to log in they get the following:

Password security has recently been upgraded. Please enter your password again.

... then, when you enter the password again, you get:

Password incorrect

... and the cycle continues...

Nothing I can seem to do will resolve this short of manually resetting a user's password via admin.  The user can use the "forgot password" action, but unfortunately many of my users email addresses are no longer valid because they were associated with a school (and many members are alumni now who no longer have their old school email address).

Any ideas at all how I can solve this problem - it's a HUGE issue for us right now :/

Pure guess, this...

Go to Admin>Server settings and rename the cookie.

If that doesn't help, check these out:

Thanks!

Unfortunately, I changed the cookie name with no avail.  I'm assuming it just needs to be something random.  Also, I can log in just fine my account that I reset my password with, so once the password is in the SMF format, everything works fine.

I've searched google prior, but haven't found a solution yet. :-/

Which, of those, have you tried?

(It'll save us duplicating things)

No Problem, here's what I've tried with no avail...

- Changing the cookiename, per your suggestion
- Accounting for special characters, although the account I'm testing has a password without special characters, so this is not the fault: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=403022.msg2803486#msg2803486
- repair-settings: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18096.0
- This fix for another scenario: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=294705.msg3405891#msg3405891

Not sure if the following are impacting me or not:
- Bugs: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=433686.msg3042048#msg3042048
- Manually reset - not sure what this guy meant, without manually resetting the password to something that was not the original password: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=389320.msg2691617#msg2691617

The only other thing that springs to mind, at the moment, is File Permissions. Even that's a bit of a long-shot, though.

Admin>Packages>File permissions.

Try changing that to "Standard" and see what happens. (Bear in mind that the page might hang, whilst waiting for the permissions to propagate through)
