Users are all of a sudden unable to upload attachments

When users try to upload attachments in my 2.0.4 forum they get the following error "Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow." Nothing has changed, and all of a sudden I am getting this error. Any ideas?

To add some detail. I have no limit set on attachment size, or attachment directory size. Currently there are  5951 files in my attachment folder and the size is 2333595 KB (2.25GB). I created a second directory for attachments and that appears to have fixed the issue although that's not confirmed. This leaves me with a few questions:

1. Does smf "bug out" if the attachment folder gets too large?
2. What should the permissions be on the attachment directory 705?
3. Does the max thumbnail size matter ( I also changed that to 250 from 150)
4. Could this be cause by anything else?

1. Yes, under some circumstances and some hosting configurations, it can do.

2. The permissions should be whatever is required to allow SMF to write to it and no higher. This will vary from host to host.

3. No.

4. There are other things, e.g. host limitation on the folder size, host limitations on new uploads as defined by the PHP configuration itself. It's possible your host recently changed these.
Holder of controversial views, all of which my own.

Thanks. It appears to be working. I am going to dial back the Max thumbnail size, and switch the directory to 705 permissions. I will update. This might become a common problem as I use godaddy for hosting.

Update I have changed the attachments directory back to the default 705 permissions, and set the max attachment size back to 150 and everything seems to be working. Solution if your attachments directory gets to be around 2GB create a secondary attachment folder with the same permissions.

I am using godaddy deluxe hosting, and smf 2.0.4

Thanks for your help.
