This has probably been covered somewhere but I cannot find the answer.

I am running Yshout 1.17 and SMF 1.1.8 and I have been seeing guests and at times guests who have found
out an IP  address of a member try to post in the shoutbox.   I have them locked out from posting and accessing
or even viewing the shoutbox because only forum members can do so.

Yet they pound on the shoutbox trying to post and it slows the forum down.   I found this by observing the
loading of the shoutbox and seeing that it was very slow and also by looking at the forum access logs.

Any one have this problem?  Thanks.

If you have a guest banned by IP address, it will be higher performance to move that up to the .htaccess file (DENY command) and remove it from the SMF ban list. If you're on a Microsoft server, I presume there is an equivalent way somewhere.

No --- Yshout parameters are set to not allow any guests to access the shoutbox at all.   The forum is a closed forum and no one
is allowed to register unless they send a personal email to  one of the administrators at a unique email address outside the forum email server..........

Thanks for you comment.

Eh, it could just be Yshout itself being slow and horribly inefficient - it got to the point where I had to ditch it and rewrite a shoutbox from scratch for the site I run a chat on (and then figure out how to import the Yshout logs into my own... no small feat, bah)

Thing is, there is no real way to prevent them - if they've figured out the IP address of a real user and somehow managed to spoof that (which is no mean feat), banning the address just means you ban a real user.

The other thing is, I can think of several scenarios where it would be possible for the requests to be from a legitimate user that has at some point logged out but left a window open - causing it to reload regularly on its own.

Thanks Arantor --- I appreciate your input.

Will try to think of a way to get this to work smoother --- but what you say makes sense.

Also --- I don't know why they need it in the first place.   But who am I to judge -- I think
it is there since it has always been that way.  LOL

Were you able to get this sorted, Maineiac?

Maineiac

More or less --- but Yshout still gives me problems when accessing the chat file.   It seems to be very slow refreshing and updating and at times I've gotten SQL errors from it.

It was running just fine until recently when my host service changed their servers and I think they have some problems.

Between the hours of 1 and 4 pm daily their servers go out to lunch.......   So might have to switch to a different host.

Thanks for asking.

I have YShout up on a site and recently tried my login to the CP, which didnt work.  Anyone know of a way to reset the password?
Ive emailed the developer with no response and i cant find any reference to a yshout site anywhere.
OR if anyone knows of a suitable replacement ( this is not integrated to and SMF forum at this time)
