i have an issue with duplicate key.

how do i change or increase the id_topic from mediumint( to medium(12)

I used sql to change it. but because i have reach the maximum.

I want to change it to allow for more space... for people to post.

when i use sql to change it to to 12 on both smf_messages and id_topic

When i post i get an error of duplicate key 0.

I notice in the id topic column. All id_topic have become 0

So I use sql to change the id_topic to equal to id_msg

How many topics do you have? Posts? Members?

What are you trying to do? Changing the (xx) "thing" makes no use. And for sure it won't solve a "duplicate" error issue...

wow....   I hope you took a backup before you did that.   IDtopic != IDmessage.

and we have an admin with 50 MILLION posts who has not had to change the column type...

if you are getting a duplicate entry, then something went screwy on your site, and changing the filed setting won't fix a duplicate.

I suggest that you try repairing your database (from phpmyadmin) and then running the find and repair errors in the forum maintenance as well


(and the forum for the warriorcatsrpg hit 50 million a month or so ago)

id_topic is set to just 8

The number between "()", in that case 8, has NOTHING to do with the maximum value the field can support. That is determined by the type of integer, and only that:

You shouldn't have changed the ids. If you have a backup from before that, restore it...
