In SMF 1.1.x I've been using a simple add-on that made the URL toolbar button properly usable.

If you pressed it without selecting any text it asked for an URL and a link text.

If you had already marked some text in your post it only asked for the URL and made that text the link text.

Unfortunately that add-on seems to have disappeared and as far as I can see there's no built-in feature or replacement add-on.

Or is there? ???

I'm assuming you're using SMF2.0 now?

Ups, sorry, forgot to mention that. Yes. I'm considering (and test-ugrading) to switch to SMF 2.

Unfortunately no, there isn't such MOD for 2.0.x (and even the version for 1.1.x was removed)

Installed.

I have seen many website use a popup for urls including a camping forum I belong too.

Excellent mod.

:)

Would be a great feature for 2.1

SMF2.1 already allows you to enter a "description" for links in the URL popup with SCeditor ;)

I really should retest it and publish it properly on the mod site.
