latest post on index page

A link to the latest post within each forum on the main forum index page would be nice. It's on each forum index page itself but not at the toplevel

What exactly do you mean?  by default SMF shows the latest topic of each board.

If you want a list of recent posts, SMF also shows that.

Perhaps a screenshot or a mockup could help us to understand what you want.

on the message index if you click it will take you to the last post in that topic.

Yeah apologies - I was caught out by the inconsistency. On the top index page you click the title (words), on the forum's index page it's an icon and the title doesn't show there, but on the left instead. My bad.
