Where simple machines by default store published pictures?

My users are using direct simple machines forum attachments a lot, but i really don´t know where the pictures are stored. Is it in my server? Should i told them to not user direct attachments anymore?

they are stored in the attachments folder. we cant tell you if they should not use attachments any longer that is up to you.

are you using SMF 2.1?

My concern is about storage space. Are the pictures stored at the "attachments" folder at my server or redirected to another one? That´s the problem.
