Migrating vital data

So I have been having various issues with SMF for quite some time.  Unread topics not showing, password reset not working, and many more small but annoying things.

So I am getting everything upgraded to 2.0.10 to see if that alleviates the problems.

But here's the thing.

I am worried if I just restore my database with all the old data it's going to bring some of those bugs and issues with it.

So what is the best way to get just the bare minimum/vital info?    Specifically which tables do I need to transfer.

I am thinking I can just grab the tables that have the message info, topic info, blah blah blah and just use them.

Is that possible or am I missing something?

it is easier to just upgrade or start with fresh files and not worry about the database. if things are in the database but not called by the code they are basically ignored anyway.

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/How_to_upload_a_fresh_set_of_files is always a good start.
