Step 7 (final) in the SMF 2.0.11 install says that the installation directory is still writable and it advises the (human) installer to make it unwritable. Which directory is this, specifically? I looked at the home dir and it is xxx, but looking recursively of course various files and folders have various attributes. So besides checking the option to delete the install.php, what else am I supposed to do?

that does not make the files and folders not writable. chmod files 444 and i believe the folders 700 and you are limiting who can write to the files/folders. most people though dont do this. it helps in case someone gets access to the files due to a hack and makes it a bit harder for them to modify the files.
