I figured a lot of people would find this handy. Because SMF is so much more advanced than YaBB SE, making an announcement board may not be as easy as you think. Here's how you do it:

Step 1. Click on "Admin" then "Manage Boards".
If the board you want to make an announcement board already exists, click on "Modify" next to the boardname and skip to step 2.
Otherwise, click on "Add Board" and fill in the appropriate info.

Step 2. Check the box marked "All Members" (and, if guests can view your board, check the "Guests" box as well).
Then, check the box marked "Notify on Announcements".
Click on "Modify".

Step 3. Click on "Modify Permissions" and scroll down to "Permissions by Board".
Click on "Local" next to the board you're using as an announcement board.
Next, check the box to the right of each membergroup (except for any group you want to allow to post announcements, such as global moderators or moderators).
At the bottom of the page, you will see two drop-down lists - one that says "Add permission..." and one that says "(Select Permission)".
Select either "Clear permission..." or "Deny permission..." from the list on the left.
Select "Post New Topics" under "[Topics]" from the list on the right.
Click on "Set Permissions".

And you're done!

No problem. I figured it would be helpful.

very much so. i had a 'new board' that i stated, in a stickied topic, that was titled "[READ ME BEFORE POSTING]", that only admins could start threads in it. that lasted less than a day before people were starting their own. i gave up. now i can go make a new board for that purpose.

I'm running SMF 1.0.5 and have an existing board I want to change to an announcement board. I cannot do the last part of step 2:

...check the box marked "Notify on Announcements"...

because there is no such box. All I've got is:

This topic is very old.  There are no longer "announcement boards".  Instead, check the "announce topic" checkbox while posting.

Is there a way to make a board so that when anyone starts a new topic all members of the board get a notification?

tommyf, Is this issue solved or do you still require assistance?

I don't believe it is currently possible, i believe they have to enable the announcement (user selection)
