Give view/post access to specific members.. not based on group?

We have some members that we'd like to give access to a special forum when they sign up for a service - only some of them may already be in other groups, so I can't just move them all into groups. Is there a mod, or any way that I can either give access to a forum to specific people, or else add them to multiple groups and then give that group access?

I looked into Member Specific Permissions (mod), but that doesn't seem to work for 1.1.4

in each profile is the option for you to add members into "additional groups"
Any additional groups are not displayed (unless you have the mulitple badges mod) and you can assign any user to one, some or even all groups in this option.
