Same problems from a week ago: preview and ajax in-post editor

Ok....here we go again.  :-[

Last week, on Sept. 5th, I started this thread:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=193208.0

It had to do with hanging issues with the "preview" function (after clicking "reply" and typing in a post), and the ajax in-post editor hanging at "Loading".

After fiddling around with it for a few days, I got frustrated, and started this thread:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=193554.0

Eventually, uninstalling all of my mods seemed to fix the "preview" and ajax in-post editor malfunctions. But, I had a lingering issue with uninstalled/deleted mods still functioning and showing up in the ADMIN cp menu. ****THAT ISSUE HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF***.

Since getting things back up and running (September 9th), I've only reinstalled one mod, and that was the "order news" mod, which basically just provides a way to re-order the news fader items. I reinstalled it on the 10th, and it's been functioning properly ever since. That was the only mod I reinstalled, and just a few minutes ago I uninstalled and deleted it...which didn't help.

Then today, sometime after 4pm (central time), the two original problems showed up again. So, here is essentially what is happening:

1. Someone wishes to reply in a thread, and clicks the "Reply" button at the bottom right corner of the thread. (This is NOT the "Quick Reply" which is available at the very bottom of the thread.)

The reply page opens...the person types their reply, and then they hit "Preview" to check their post before submitting. The "fetching preview" indicator comes up, but the preview never shows...it's like the process hangs at that stage.

--> However, if you go back a few steps and use the "Quick Reply" instead of the "Reply", and hit the "Preview" on the "Quick Reply" box...it works.

2. Same type of issue, sort of:
The forum has the Ajax in-post edit capability. For example, someone wants to quick-edit a post they just made, so instead of clicking the "Modify" button, they just hit the Ajax edit button, which is found in the lower right hand section of the post window, near the "report to moderator" link. What normally happens is the "quick edit" is clicked, a bar appears at the top that says "loading" and then the edit window opens directly inside the post box, without switching to a separate screen altogether. However, there seems to be a hang-issue with this as well now. The "loading" bar will appear, but it just hangs there, and the in-post edit box never comes up.

-->However, if you click the regular "modify" button, and the resulting screen loads, you're able to edit just fine.

I'm in the middle of a million things here at home tonight, but I'll check this thread as long as I'm awake, to check for any instruction or updates.

I'm beginning to think that the last time these two problems happened (the "preview" function and the ajax in-post editor function) it had nothing to do with my feature modifications, but something else...simply because those same two issues are back, and I've done NOTHING to my forums since I got this fixed a few days ago, with the exception of that one MOD reinstall, and daily DB backups.

Anyway....I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
I'm at the end of my rope with this.

Thanks,
Talismen

Just discovered...looks like I'm also having issues with the "quote" feature.
When "quote" is clicked, the page automatically scrolls down to the "quick reply" box (which is normal", and the "Loading" bar appears at the top of the screen, but, it hangs there....and the quoted text never shows up in the "quick reply" box.

What version of smf are you running?
What browser are you using?

I personally don't think its a bug in smf itself.  Possible either an issue with that mod or a theme or your host eg php.  Looks like a javascript error to me.

I've register a "test" account to test it myself.

Talismen

Version 1.1.3
Browser: I.E.7

I haven't changed the theme....and already uninstalled/deleted that one mod.

Also just tried the ajax editor in this thread, and it works.
So...maybe it's not my browser.

Thanks for approving my account.

However its not recommended that you make anyone offering help an admin for security reasons.
There is no way to tell whether I'm incompetent or have malicious intent, which unfortunately a small minority of people do.

HOWEVER as I suspected its a javascript issue with the following errors being produced in both IE and firefox

Error: junk after document element

I know...but, I wasn't sure how to get you the priv's you needed, and yet not make you an admin  :D

Man...I know nothing about java.
Ask me about VMS/DCL command language and I might know but...this stuff is greek to me.

So did that one "order news" mod change the theme settings? Or...is something triggering this that I just haven't discovered yet? Like, something with the host?
Do you feel.....like I do?

Talismen

OH WAIT!!!!
I had inserted something into my news fader that might be a trigger. It's an ad for a movie, and I signed up to be an "affiliate".

Here's the script for that...and I've removed the "<" at the beginning of the first line, so it wouldn't show the ad in this post:

Talismen

I'm going to switch you to "admin3"
It should provide the privs you need, without alot of frills.
Do you feel.....like I do?

Talismen

Ok...just did it.
Let me know if the privs need to be adjusted...and thanks again!
Do you feel.....like I do?

Talismen

Also changed your display name to
"testTech".

That way my other admin and mod will know what's going on, if they happen to stop by.

karlbenson

Talisman.
I'm afraid I do not know how to resolve this issue, hopefully in identifying the following errors, a support member will be able to assist further.

I'm sorry I could not help more.  For security reasons it would be advisable to de-admin my test account COMPLETELY.
I also doubt whether anyone providing assistance would need admin access to help resolve this issue.

Heres the errors in the quickmodify

I thank you for your efforts! They are appreciated!

I will reset the account in a few minutes.

Thanks again!

well, i'm not very well versed in javascript myself, but improperly placed code can definitely cause problems with javascript!

Can you post a link to your site?

Talismen

Thanks all!
I've got a HUGE project here at work today, that I was just handed this morning.

I'll be checking in on this, when I can, but will most likely not be too available until later on tonight from home.

If someone needs certain privs to check on things, just send me a PM either here or over at my forum.

I just don't understand how this code got out of whack.
I've not been altering anything in the coding and I don't know a thing about java, so I wouldn't be touching that anyway.

Do you feel.....like I do?

Talismen

Ok....I'm finally logged on.
Does anyone know HOW this java script error could be cropping up? And, how do I fix it?

i've been unsuccessful in figuring out what is causing it.  I honestly have no idea.  What changed between the time it was working and when it stopped?

Hi...thanks for the reply.

The only thing that changed was the loading of one MOD..."Order News".
I had this mod installed for months, with no problems. Then, a few weeks ago, all heck broke loose and these same two functions started to malfunction.

I went thru a complete uninstall/delete of all my mods at that time, and that fixed the malfunctions. I wasn't able, as I uninstalled/deleted, to attempt to figure out which MOD it might have been that was causing the issues...but, I had about 8 or 10 MODS installed, and the "Order News" was one of them. At that time, it had been installed and working for months, with no problems.

Then, when I got things fixed a week or so ago, I reinstalled only one MOD of the 8 or 10 I had uninstalled...and that was the "Order News" MOD. It worked for a few days, and then the functionality of those two things went nuts again. Now...the MOD functionality still worked...but the 'preview', ajax in-post editor and 'quote' wouldn't work.

Just a few minutes ago, when I replied "Nevermind",....I had gone back in, and unzipped/installed the backup that was done before I installed the "Order News" MOD. Things seem to be working again....but, I cannot figure out why that MOD would do what it did.

I'm dumbfounded.

me too :P

Most likely a mod problem though... but a really odd one...
