How to do themes?

Okay, until now I managed to just copy the existing default theme and change the colors. But, can anybody help me with doing the complete theme thing?
What needs editing? Is there a way to edit 2 or 3 files and that it reflects on the whole forum or do I have to edit all of the files in the themes folder? (exclude the images, they obviously need editing for a new theme)

Editing index.template.php will affect the whole board, for most people, this is the only template file they need to edit.

has anyone made a good tut on theming?  like here's the code for a bunch of things you could use in your index.template.php and this is how to put theme where you want them?
