As I have modded out all three from my forum, I vote for them to go. Pointless, flashy, annoying, invalid "text effects" that do not belong on a professional forum system - not exactly because they are annoying, but because they are (as has already been noted) not valid code. Thus, they are better fit in a mod, not the final forum package. But yes, I also agree this shouldn't be done as some users seem to still want them. So my proposition is to keep them, but add an option in the admin panel to toggle these functions (and other BBC?) on or off.

I use Opera anyway, so these effects do not show up when I browse... Thus, the whole effect for me to keep them are gone. If the purpose of the effects is to draw attention or make news tickers (both have been suggested in the topic), but not all can see them, the point is lost.

If I removed these I'd probably remove the flash button too to keep everything semetrical.

As I asked earlier, why remove something that is already there.  I'd prefer an option to turn them off.  I realize there are some that don't like the glow, shadow or move (or even flash) but there are others that do.  Since they are already there, why not just leave them and add an extra option? This would be yet another reason that SMF is than the competition.

I'm not going to take them out unless 80% or more want them out.

I normally don't mind glow... but some people decide to put their entire posts in the glow tags. That is why I hate it.

The move tag isn't too bad
, but the other 2 are....

...On second thoughts, bin the lot of them!

Move is a useful addition that adds to the function of the news box. I have had ZERO complaints about this function from my users. What I have had, is many compliments from my users about the move function and what it has done to enhance the site.

That's no argument. As HTML is allowed in the Forum News, you can simply use a marquee tag in the news box to achieve the move effect. An own BBCode is not needed if the News box is all you will use Move for.

Of course, using Marquee in your news would then render the forum XHTML incompatible, but then that is by choice and not because the forum uses an invalid XHTML code by design.

Don't remove any of them.

HTML compliance or whatever compliance is not the only thing which counts in the world!

Whoever dislikes them can trivially take the bbc tags out by modifying "Post.template.php". Simply delete the array elements you wish not to have.

I'd say that you can remove the glow, and probarbly also the features to create a table. I tried making a table in YSE1.5.4, and it was a test topic that broke the tables, in SMF when you have the tables it doesn't work, so I'd say remove them, as they have no use anymore.

Why? Why not the other way around? Why can't a mod be written that can add them back in if someone wants that, instead of a mod that removes them when they don't show in most browsers (the majority still uses IE, but who knows how long that will last, as Microsoft has stopped supporting the browser...)?

Grudge

Microsoft stopped supporting IE??? Surely that's just on MAC?

I'd like to see it as an option as I've said numerous times. They don't validate so an option should be included to enable/disable them depending on how important cross-browser compatibility is to the forum admin,
I'm only a half geek really...

what about just beeing able to deaktivate them in the personal profile, so the are showed as normal text?

think it's a fair compromise

Agreed. People are using it, it should remain in there, but the option to switch it off both sitewide and member-wise sounds fair. Then it is up to the admins and/or members whether to use it or not... ;)
