Nested Quotes - controlling the levels

Hey all,

Cross posting this here because it didn't get a response in the Administration / Functionality thread:

So -- if we have already enabled nested quoting, but now want to disable it, we've seen some anomalous behavior in quoting posts that already contain nested quotes.  For example, quoting this message:

Quote Level 1-before

Quote Level 2-before

Quote Level 3

Quote Level 2-after

Quote Level 1-after

Outside Text
*********** 
Becomes:

Quote Level 2-after

Quote Level 1-after


Outside Text

***********

Is there a known fix for this?    And more interestingly from my perspective, has anyone written code to strip out all but the top 2 or 3 levels of quotes?  Ultimately that seems the best solution in our case to facilitate discussions and keeping some context in the quote, but not letting things get out of hand.

We're running SMF 1.0.7
