Well, which version do you want to update to? If you're on 1.1.11, the latest version could be 1.1.16 or 2.0.2... it's possible to go to 1.1.16 without losing any mods, but it's not possible to go to 2.0.2 without reinstalling all your mods from scratch (because they all need to be rewritten)

Be aware, too, that some of those mods simply might not exist for the v2 branch of SMF.

you should have a notice in the smf admin and the smf admin > package manager that patches are available. Just click on that link and follow the instructions.
