Hello,

We went live in September, and our forum is growing slowly (we are getting about 5k views per day), and I am curious about a few things.  We don't have an admin for tech stuff, and are flying on autopilot.

1 - The spell checking doesn't work any more.
2 - We need to modify the cosmetics of our pages.
3 - We want to add one of those static RSS news thingamajiggers....  When someone clicks on the news item, it automatically spawns a new thread and removes it from the queue.
4 - How is our DB?  Does it need to be cleaned up or tuned?

I can post the site if I'm allowed to do so...

thanks

kat

1-Use Opera or Firefox. They have one built-in. ;)

2-Like how?

I do too.  Doesn't work anymore.

Move the main board in a little...  free up some space on the right to place image links of partners, some advertisers, etc.  We have a package running that I have no clue about (avena?), and we have a link, but I'm not sure how to manipulate it.

So, does RSS already come with the forum?

Illori

yes by default smf has an rss feed, but not an rss reader.

How do I get a reader, so when someone clicks on the story, it spawns a new thread?

I read all that, but it implies that I have any idea of anything in the first place...

How can I set this up on my forum?  Is there a step-by-step on how to set up an RSS thingy?

Illori

well in what way do you want it setup? if you see a mod you like there read its support thread for further information on how it works. we can not read your mind to see what you want to do. you could also create a mod request in the proper board if no existing mods work for your needs.

Something like what is on the home page...

Illori

that is custom coded and not released, you would need to check if any of the portals can do something similar.

oh lordy.....  I was told that is a pretty common functionality for forums...  durnit!

Illori

in general we have rss to feed, but to show up somewhere you need code to do that, which is not a default feature of smf.

so that is pretty difficult to get that functionality?  Our forum is growing and we are getting demands for that...

Illori

i have no real idea, but most likely in the near future will not be a default feature of smf, so a mod or custom code is needed.

so that is a mod?  I am confused.  I just want that same functionality where our users can click on a topic and is spawns a new/existing thread, like the one at front.  The link of the RSS mods doesn't tell me anything, because I don't know what I'm looking at, or where I should look.  If it requires an extension, or something, that's fine.  I don't want to hire a custom programmer to give me this functionality...

Illori

the code found on the main page here was coded by a team member and it at this time will not be shared, so either looking on the mod site for a mod that exists to do what you want or you will need to post a mod request, no other way to get what you want.

by posting a mod request, does that prompt someone to help me find if that mod exists?

Illori

no most likely someone would reply if they are willing to code the mod for you and if they want to be paid to do so. and there is no guarantee that anyone will pick it up.
