It sounds like some kind of errors are causing a problem with your portal.
Please check several things:
Look for error messages on your web page at the top and at the bottom.
Use the HTML validation link at the bottom of the page to find HTML errors
Check your SMF log file.

If you provide a link to the portal page, perhaps I can help you track down the source of the problem.

i have got this error at the bottom but thought that was to do with something else that i'm trying find out what is causing it but having problems finding it out

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'chat/chatwinsize.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/steve/public_html/forum/Themes/default/BoardIndex.template.php on line 396

I see portal stuff at http://www.christianstogether.co.uk/forum/
It looks like you are running in "integration" mode.  I see the Board Indes, with a top bloc, and some right-side blocks.

This looks normal to me for Simple Portal in "integration" mode.

----------------------------------------------------------
You have lots of HTML errors on your home page.
Please use the XHTML validator to see them all.
* Some are related to the flashchat, I think
* Some are caused by the mod that puts the pictures in the board names -- the <img> tags MUST be <img /> for XHTML, and every img must also have an alt tag
* And others.

Hello,
When I try to install simple portal, it passes all test, but comes up with this error at installation:

Database Error
Table 'smf_r3.smf_sp_functions' doesn't exist
File: /hermes/bosweb25b/b859/ipg.r3clancom2/forums/Packages/temp/install2.php
Line: 582

I'm running SMF 2.0.1, but have also tried to install it while emulating version 2.0

any ideas on how to fix?

Angelina Belle

When you use the package manager to install a package, it runs a file in the package called install.php
For SMF2, That file is found in the smf 2 folder inside the package zip (or .tar.gz in this case) file.
This file creates the table, and then uses it.

I am surprised that this is the FIRST error you encountered. You didn't get an error on creating the table?
Are there any other errors in your SMF error log?
Any other errors associated with your database?

Nope I didn't get any other errors before this. I just checked the error log and took a couple screenshots of what I saw there:

Angelina Belle

So this was not your first error.
All in all, I would say your Simple Machines install did not go well at all.
Directories did not get created (/Themes/ds-natural_20/images/sp, for example), files did not get copied to where they belong, at least one table did not get created.

This is an SMF problem. Package Manager was unable to do its job, probably because of permission (or perhaps even file/directory ownership) problems.

Please uninstall Simple Portal, then study your permission situation. When that is corrected, please try the install again.
Please read the documentation at simpleportal.net on solving installation problems.

Subject/Title Length of BoardNEWS

I'm using custom boardNEWS block and want to set limit of words/character in subject line.

If subject is big it goes automatically in second line which is messing my block,

so I would like to keep it one line. I want to make it shorter.

Please guide me how to set the subject limit/length in boardNews block?

Angelina Belle

The board news block does not have a paramter for that.
However, since you are already customizing the boardnews block, you could add a parameter to control this.
This discussion could go on for a little while, so I invite you to visit the custom coding board at simpleportal.net.

I will not be available there until next week, but maybe someone can help you with adding a parameter to the boardnews block, and then using it to control the max. length of the subject line.

is the simpleportal site down?

i wanted to ask about a bug fix as people on my forum although unable to speak in a shoutbox for staff they can still access it to read the history by manipulating the history url.

see the shoutbox we use for everyone would be say - index.php?action=portal;sa=shoutbox;shoutbox_id=1  - and the staff one would be index.php?action=portal;sa=shoutbox;shoutbox_id=2 and any member seems to be able to access that history even though they cant type in it.

is this an issue for everyone or is it a setting i havnt done right or is there a fix i havent found.

any help would be greatly apreciated

The SP.net site was down this morning for some scheduled downtime from our service provider. I had to manually restart some services this morning, but we're back up now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

You probably don't have the shoutbox permissions set properly. Shoutbox and block permissions are separate. If you don't want X group to access a shoutbox, you need to make sure that he isn't allowed to view both shoutbox and block.

SimplePortal 2.3.4 RC1 Released!

Quote
The SimplePortal Team has been hard at work for the last several months developing the next version of SimplePortal, 2.3.4, code-named "cherry"! We've heard your feedback, and included many requested features in our upcoming version, although it was supposed to be a bug-fix-only release.

Since we would like to have testing and feedback for our new version, in order to provide you the most stable product possible, we have decided to make our release candidate public. This means you can download the upcoming version now, test and report the bugs.

However, please note that: There will be no install/upgrade/uninstall support provided for/from RC1 version. Although this is a stable version, we strongly advise against using this package on your live forums. This package is only for testing purposes.

For those who are wondering, here's some (but not all) of the features of our new version:

  • SMF 2.0.1 and 1.1.15 compatibility.
  • Two new positions for blocks: header and footer.
  • Revamped permission system with the ability to deny permissions.
  • Complex display options using PHP expressions for block display.
  • Implemented basic flood protection for shoutbox.
  • Introduced group based shoutbox moderators.
  • Added ability to prune shoutboxes with various options.
  • Links posted to shoutbox are now shortened.
  • Added ability to whisper (write private shouts) in shoutbox.
  • Improved compatibility with other mods.
  • Improved Right-To-Left languages support.
  • Fixed the bugs reported in 2.3.3.
Your feedback is welcome here and in the related topics in Team Blogs board. Please post any bugs to the Bugs board.

You can download the package from Beta Packages category in Downloads area.

Thanks,
-The SimplePortal Team
