Yes, I have tried numerous times now from various points. I have even reinstalled the SMF board and tried running the conversion from scratch.

To be honest, I don't necessarily need to upgrade the whole thing, just being able to copy the topics/messages from a couple of boards from the old forum would be sufficient. Would that be possible just by running some SQL?

That above error occurs when your session expires.

If you can use command line, you could use the converter that was and wouldn't need to worry about session timeouts.

I am with a hosting provider, so not sure that is possible. However, I will investigate later. Failing that, is there anything else that can be done? How about executing SQL manually? I am more familiar with MSSQL, but in there you could write queries that span multiple databases or use utilities such as DTS (SQL 2000) to transfer data across. Is there anything like that which could be done?

the converters are mixed sql and php because some parts can't be done by sql only (copy the avatars, atttachments, smileys..), but you can setup a local webserver environment like XAMPP for example and convert a backup of your forum locally, then upload the converted SMF to your webspace.

If I just wanted to migrate boards, posts and (maybe) members, is that not possible from just SQL? If so, any chance of what I should be looking for?

It should be possible. The members in SMF are stored in smf_members. The boards in smf_boards with smf_categories holding the categories information for those boards. Posts are held in smf_topics and smf_messages, with smf_topics holding information about the topic itself and smf_messages being the actual content.

If you look at each of those tables, the column names should say their worth of what they mean. The developers try not to make it to confusing what each column in the table does
