I think you need an rss reader, happens to me as well. Before I just had xml in the url and it would download the xml feed. Added type=rss in the url that's how it should be for a proper rss feed.

Hm.. could be me but i keep getting an error..

I'm using: RssReader 1.0.88.0 and SharpReader0960 and trying to import this link: http://atlantis.montecarlohosting.net/~arksvr/forum/index.php?action=.xml;board=504;type=rss
both applications doesn't let me import the rss link..

But when i validate the link: http://www.feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A//atlantis.montecarlohosting.net/%7Earksvr/forum/index.php%3Faction%3D.xml%3Bboard%3D504%3Btype%3Drss

I am not sure if it is an SMF issue I heard once that feeds weren't 100% valid but in your case it did pass so who knows.

I've added the mod (1.1 RC2 running) but can't see the icons. I really like this idea, and would really like to get it to work. I switched back to the default theme too, still nothing there. Did I kill it by having a different theme running when I installed?

It would be nicer if it would also display the icon for sub-forums.

For sub-forums, do the same edit on MessageIndex.template.php.

you need to install it manually.  apply the mod, then go to your FTP and edit:

'root/Themes/{YOUR_THEME}/BoardIndex.template.php'

Search For:
', $board['name'], '</a></b>

and immediately after inline add this to it:
&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

You also need to unzip the mod package and upload 'rss.png' to

'root/Themes/{YOUR_THEME}/images/'

I had to remove the type=rss part top get it to work properly. Otherwise it was trying to download a php file.

If it isn't working properly, please open your "BoardIndex.template.php" file. Find the mod snippet. In tone of the lines you'll see a link code that looks something like this:

&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

Remove the "type=rss" from the link code.

Just curious.. it works for child forums/sub-forums right?

Also, does it update a page's auto-feed detection if the page being viewed is a specific forum?
Say I clicked on forum B, the auto-feed discovery will update its link to the Feed Link of that forum.

If not, any plans on adding it?  That'll be great to add, will also help forums get indexed better by SEBots if they find feed links from the auto-feed discovery ;)

Thanks!!

if you want to use RSS2 (the accepted 'latest' version of RSS - coz there's RSS2.0.1 and RSS2.0.2, but the lack of a centralize group for RSS made it impossible.  There's RSS3 in development now ;p  )

change

type=rss

to:

type=rss2

in this code:

&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

Now if you want to use Atom for your feeds, do the same thing as above but instead of type=rss2 put type=atom

enjoy!!

PS
If RSS/Atom are part of SMF Coding, why not integrate it to the forum distribution itself?  I don't get it hehe...  an Admin Panel for Feed will be good to, to give people an option between RSS0.92, RSS1, RSS2, and Atom.  ^_^  (I haven't tested SMF's Atom if it will produce Atom1.0 instead of the old Atom0.3.  I don't want to bother with it right now.)

And maybe add an option as to where they want to put the Feed Icon :D  Or if they want to use a different feed icon..

anyway, lolz, not that it matters to me  hehe...

gj :D

I installed the mod with no problems.  The icons are showing up on the index page of the site.  However, whenever I try to take one of my rss links and add it to my Feedreader, it says it's an unsupported feed format.  I went in and manually removed the type=rss snippet.  I also tried changing it to rss2 before removing it.  At least now I can see the feed when I actually click on the rss link.  But it's still not showing up in my Feedreader.

Its with FeedReader.
There are feed reader services and applications out there that are too strict when it comes to detecting which is a valid feed link/URL and which isn't.

In this case:

http://boards.laibcoms.com/index.php?action=.xml;board=1;type=rss2

FeedReader do not like either one or all of the extra stuff in the URL like the '?', the '.', the ';' and the '='.

It's sad tho.  Try it with google reader, it works fine.  Also it will not work with MySpace and Friendster ;)  But will work with groovenet.ph/Laibcoms :p

Display of emails within feed - only occurs when you enable display of email or disable it and access your own topic feeds.
So np about this :p

Sidenote - mozilla and iexplorer have trouble displaying the feed (as other reported here allready).
Works very good with opera.com

Cheers
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Laibeus Lord on December 21, 2006, 05:57:22 AM
I think everyone should update to Firefox 2 up (or its mozilla counterpart) and IE7.  Tested it under FF2 and IE7 and the two browsers render all feeds correctly - rss, rss2, atom - with the =rss part intact (ie, it doesn't download a file as others have reported).

Since I don't have FF1.x and IE6 anymore, it is safe to assume that the "file downloading" issue only occurs from the old versions of the two browsers mentioned, and I can attest that I did encounter some feeds like that, but not with FF2 and IE7.

Just a suggestion to those getting the "file download" thing.  In my opinion, it is better to leave the =rss2 or =rss or =atom part intact.  And right now, I strongly suggest you switch to rss2 ;)  Maybe in a year or two, atom will be at par with rss2 then we switch to atom :p

I know what you mean, but I know already that people who are visiting my forum are not the most 'savvy' of Internet users.  I don't want to have something on the forum that isn't going to work for everyone.  I think it will just add confusion.  As I said, no offense to the mod.  I really wish I could use it, but I just don't think that if I can get it to work with what I like to use, then I can't expect my visitors to try to fumble their way through either.  I will certainly continue to watch this mod and see if I can use it in the future.  I love feeds. :)

Well, you got a point.  A mod that won't be used by the a reasonable percentage of your community is as good as not installing.

I think one way to overcome the problem, as was mentioned earlier, is the use of Rewrite_mod via .htaccess, though I haven't ventured deeper into that yet so I might not be able to give a sample at this point in time.  If I get a time, especially if the need arises on my end, I'll surely share it here.

The second option is for SMF to also include FEED (rss, rss2, atom) links to the readable URL feature of the board.  When I was doing some experiments, I noticed that the feature is actually built-in already with SMF1.1.x, so all that this MOD did is to provide a Feed Icon besides each every forum and sub-forum, and to add support per forum.  The feed feature is already there.  ^_^

Well, the Feed Community believes that 2007 will be the year where Feeds will be mainstream, so sooner or later, SMF will give full support or be left behind by other PHP-based BBSes.  ^_^

I have added to the Feeds Mod Buttons for My Yahoo, and Google Home Page.  When they click the link it auto adds the feed to their Yahoo Home Page or Google Home Page.

Also it helps in having the SE's go to your Forum more often.

doctoreast, you need to have an RSS reader installed.  You can try FeedReader (http://www.feedreader.com/), it is a nice free RSS reader for Windows.

vbgamer45, I already thanked you for your SMF Archive mod, so I feel a little funny thanking you again here.  But good work needs to be recognized.  So once again great work!  All the best.

Skunkie,
  Since the majority of visitors are IE/Gates; this means that
the RSS icons mod isn't a real plus, is incomplete, until there
is a feedreader with it.

thanks for this  ;) very useful

Sparky you have to manual modify your templates boardindex.template.php and messageindex.template.php files.. its not very hard.. backup before modifying !

search for
', $board['name'], '</a></b>

ad before
&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

and remeber to add a rss.png icon to your templates image folder  8)

I might be sort off cached

// Get the associative array representing the xml.
if ($user_info['is_guest'] && !empty($modSettings['cache_enable']) && $modSettings['cache_enable'] >= 2)
$xml = cache_get_data('xmlfeed-' . $xml_format . ':' . md5(serialize($_GET)), 240);
if (empty($xml))
{
$xml = $subActions[$_GET['sa']][0]($xml_format);

if ($user_info['is_guest'] && !empty($modSettings['cache_enable']) && $modSettings['cache_enable'] >= 2)
cache_put_data('xmlfeed-' . $xml_format . ':' . md5(serialize($_GET)), $xml, 240);
}

It doesn't look like the feed itself is cached I took a quick look at it.

I suppose if anyone is malicious they could tank my board without a feed anyway. Unless I enforce stricter flood control.

Although having a cache might be a good idea to ease the load on the database.

That wont work.. that was the reason my rss didnt work on most readers..

You have to go to server settings and change the URL for your site to http://www

After doin this your rss feeds will work fine

http://www.mysite.com/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss

Will work fine..

Hope this helps for some - That was the problem i had !

I dont know.. but i seen this problem a few times now..

If you dont use www.. it looks like its working because you can open the feed in your browser.. but when you put the feed into a RSS reader you get "No feed found at this URL"

When you add the www it seems to work perfect.. dont ask me why LoL

Even if your site works fine without www the feed wont work without it :-s

And what's the good of that? Too many of these mods can't be extended to themes other than the default -- which means they can't be used. Thanks for nothing :(

Or can anyone suggest how I would adapt it to another theme?

All mods that makes changes to a theme only install on the default theme since themes can have different coding the package manager would have no way to install it on them.
You can install mods maunally.

Reply for Gene Steinberg, i am no php coder but i think i can help you:

In file Themes/[your theme]/BoardIndex.template.php
Find:

', $board['name'], '</a></b>
Add after:

&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

In file Themes/[your theme]/MessageIndex.template.php
Find:

', $board['name'], '</a></b>

Add after:

&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

You can use vbgamers very nice tool to find out this: http://server.daniel15.com/smf/package.php

add the code right after this code (before the <br /> tag)

I don't understand exactly what you mean. It's not specific to any board. Just as you asked. If you want to
put some html and reference an image then try something like this:

<a href="http://www.site.com/smf/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss;limit=20"><img src="http://www.site.com/smf/Themes/default/images/rss.png" alt="feed" />&nbsp;Forum Feed</a>

Of course replacing the appropriate theme directory if necessary....

OK, right now at techbroadcasting.com/smf, I have a separate RSS feed for each board.

What I'd also like to do is have one, along with the icon, for the entire forum. Make sense now?

Take a look at the board and you'll see what I'm getting at.

Try this - tested briefly  on my board... As I mentioned - I think it is a poor choice to place it there because it looks out of place. But if you changed it to another icon it might look better... I like it in the news section instead... Mostly because it is much easier to implement and edit there.

Look for this:

// If the user is a guest, show [login] and [register] buttons.
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
{
echo '
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=login">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/login.gif" alt="' . $txt[34] . '" border="0" />' : $txt[34]), '</a>', $context['menu_separator'], '
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=register">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/register.gif" alt="' . $txt[97] . '" border="0" />' : $txt[97]), '</a>';
}
// Otherwise, they might want to [logout]...
else
echo '
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=logout;sesc=', $context['session_id'], '">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/logout.gif" alt="' . $txt[108] . '" border="0" />' : $txt[108]), '</a>';

Replace it with this:

// If the user is a guest, show [login] and [register] buttons.
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
{
echo '
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=login">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/login.gif" alt="' . $txt[34] . '" border="0" />' : $txt[34]), '</a>', $context['menu_separator'], '
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=register">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/register.gif" alt="' . $txt[97] . '" border="0" />' : $txt[97]), '</a>
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=.xml;type=rss;limit=25">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/rss.png" alt="' . 'Rss' . '" border="0" />' : 'Rss'), '</a>';
}

You'll have to be more specific. I cannot troubleshoot something for you otherwise. A location to where it "thinks the image is" would be a start. Otherwise it's just a vague description...

At any rate finding where it he image is should be a trivial move for you to overcome. You can just either copy it to the location where it isn't or make a small edit to the code...

My psychic powers suggest that the languages folder [english] is the culprit.
. $context['user']['language']
That means I would try this (which basically removes the language folder from the equation):

// If the user is a guest, show [login] and [register] buttons.
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
{
echo '
<a href="', $scripturl, '?action=login">', ($settings['use_image_buttons'] ? '<img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/' . $context['user']['language'] . '/login.gif" alt="' . $txt[34] . '" border="0" />' : $txt[34]), '</a>', $context['menu_separator'], '

I noticed there was a button generator. The generator is missing the RSS feed icon. However maybe you can contact the web page owner and see if it isn't too much of an inconvenience to add one for you. A bonafide button would make it look good.

I just wanted to mention Feedburner. http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/home

I have a small limit of how many SQL queries my service will allow in a day. Therefore I would like to take advantage of feedburner. I moved my blog over to it and redirection of board feeds might not be a bad idea too in this case. I have not tried it yet for board feeds but I don't see any reason it would not work. What I have happening is that some people have email clients fetching the feeds every 2 minutes, 24hrs a day. It must be their work computers or something.

Anyway that's all...

I had RC3 and the Babylon theme, and although the mod said that it was installed happily, it did not work and had to modify code manually.

By the way, it would be great if you could also add rss icons for each topic, so someone could follow ONLY a specific topic if they want so.

Hi great mod. Was wondering. I have a main site that i would like certain topics to feed too. Have it show the posts name and then so many characters say 25 then they click to read the full thing in the forum.  I am using a wordpress mod that you plug in rss feeds and it makes posts. Your feeds work great with the wordpress mod but of course it also feeds the comments too. So it ends up making more and more posts just based on comments. I know this isnt your fault but wondered if you know away I can just feed the first post in these topics. If anyone has any ideas I would really apperciate it, thankyou.

Question, about RSS Showing emails:

In a previous post, you state to hide emails in the rss feed, to disable email. I have successfully done that for a guest, but don't know which button to check for a normal user. Under Admin>Permissions>Regular Members in the General Area I have: Send user email disabled. Yet the emails still show to regular members in the rss feed.

Do you know which setting will turn this off. As you know posting peoples emails through the rss feed is not a good idea. Please help me with this issue if you have some time.

That's a general SMF questoin. But it will show the email if the logged in user has permission to view the emails.

I second the idea for RSS for Topics.  I would find it extremely useful to have my users be able to follow only specific topics if they would like.

Hi I've got it in SMF 1.1.4 and done the remove "type=rss" hack so the url now shows me an xml list properly in the browser.
However, when I try to use that url for a WordPress sidebar rss widget, it tells me no such rss feed can be found at that url
- is this because the feed is xml?  I didn't think that mattered, because the rss feeds I'm running into SMF via FeedPoster are all xml url's
Really stumped now because I have 2 board that I really wanted to use for sidebar teasers in the blog to pull people into the forums (mainly because the WordPress SEO mod genuinely works whereas all the SMF ones just trash my forum).
I've tried using the url in WordPress with & without the type=rss, and have even tried switching roung the index.php and action=xml (that had an interesting effect - try it some time in a blank browser window  ;))
Anyone got any clues?

Please consider not using themes that you appear to be unable to edit for yourself. Dilber MC in particular tends to be a problem for inexperienced users and I've already given you details of the SMF documantation regarding editing mods into themes in other replies.

Hello,

I have installed this mod but I noted a problem.

I use SMF 1.1.4. and Mozilla Firefox as browser. First I made the login process and then tried to subscribe to a board feed in my forum. All ok (Mozilla asked me to add this feed to bookmarks) and after I made logout.

After few minutes, I came back to my forum and, after the login, Mozilla asked me if I would like to subscribe to a feed of my forum (that I have not selected before!) and, if I accepted, the page remained blank.
I noted that this happens only at the first login AFTER the one in which I subscribed to a feed in my forum. In fact, after the first login, all became ok and the forum works as usual.

Is it an error of the Mod? How to solve it? I am very interested in this feed and it should be usuful for me, but with this error is useless.

Thanks

Roberto

Hey vbgamer45,

Love this mod.  Thanks heaps!

I thought you might make one edition.  There needs to be an icon for the overall Recent Posts of the forum.  I added one myself manually as follows:

On line 265 of the /Themes/default/BoardIndex.template.php file:

Change this:

<td class="titlebg" colspan="2">', $txt[214], '</td>

To this:

<td class="titlebg" colspan="2">', $txt[214], '&nbsp;<a href="http://<SITEURL>/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml" target="_blank"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a></td>

Where <SITEURL> is the URL of your particular SMF website (i.e. www.myforum.com).

Just my thoughts...

Cheers!

- MWM

Hello,

I installed your great Mod and it works great.

I copied and pasted an RSS link to one website of mines to see how the Mod works.

I would like to control which part of the content visible on the website where I attached the RSS code. At this moment, 6-7 rows of the RSS link are visible on the website with my RSS feed: how to control them (for example to display on one website only the board title)?

Which file or code have I to modify? How?

Thank you

Hello, I have a board with SMF114, TP.09X and using the 'classic' theme installed. I added the following mod : http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=376

to the board, and the install went without any displayed errors. I t seems though  that the 'child boards' aren't being updated  on the individual boards RSS feed but posts in them do appear in the 'MAIN-Forum' RSS-XML feed.

Could someone please help me to get this functionality enabled for the'child boards' so that it both updates, and allows an individual to subscribe to that 'child board' much like the mod allows for the main ones?

I'm not sure if it will help but here is the XML code from the mod

I actually did install it manually, but it doesn't seem to show the feed for the child board on it's associated 'parent board feed'. It does however show up on the 'global-Forum feed'. I tried to add the code to the 'child board' in the same manner and it caused all sorts of errors. That is why I'm asking as this is outside of my expertise.

vbgamer, I have several private forums on my site. I would like for members who have permission to see those forums to be able to subscribe to them as well. However, when I add the RSS URL for such a forum to Google Reader, it simply returns feed results for the very first forum on the site rather than the one I was trying to subscribe to.

I already confirmed that Google Reader can successfully subscribe to any of the public forums on my site so it just seems to be the private ones that are causing a problem.

I still need the private forums to be secure, but even a feed that says, "A new topic has been posted at the following URL at such-and-such-day-and-time by user-so-and-so," would be exceptionally handy. (Basically, I need a way for project team member to know when others have posted updates, but e-mail notifications are not working for all of them.)

Any suggestions?

Is there some way to get this feed to display when a board has a new post, but not a to display one for every post... like how when you click the option to be alerted of replies to your post you are alerted once no matter how many replies are made until you visit the topic.

Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards (Updated for SMF 2.0!)
Post by: evolution06 on October 06, 2008, 03:49:29 PM
To align the feed icon to the right add align="right" into the feed and feed2 xml files
Example: www.prestigegaming.net > is that how you wanted it?
Tested on Internet explorer and Firefox

I have attached the feed and feed2 xml files modified to align the image to the right hope this is ok. In my opinion the feed icon looks much better to the right like that and not crowding the forum name/description

Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards (Updated for SMF 2.0!)
Post by: evolution06 on October 06, 2008, 06:29:52 PM
what I did is uninstalled the mod redownload it and edited the files then reinstalled it.. because I could not find those files anywhere..

1) Uninstall the mod (very simple)
2) Download the 2 files I attached or edit your own
3) Redownload the Feed Icon mod
4) Drag the edited files inside the Redownloaded Feed Icon mod (No need to unzip the download) Should overwrite the ones in there
5) Reinstall the mod via acp

Takes a couple of minutes.. I could not find those XML files in my cPanel.. So this was the fast solution. I am sure there is another way to edit them but I am new to SMF so yeah I will figure it out eventually.

Cheers,
Scott

my icons do not show, just a link that says rss

is there a settings menu, i can't find

see www.mychemistrytutor.com/forums

It is showing RSS text only because you need to upload the image to your current theme folder. The mod only uploads the image to SMF's default theme. I.E I am using Diablo3 theme so I had to upload the RSS icon to the Diablo3 template folder.

Hi!

I'm using this mod with sms 1.1.7 and default template. All works fine except for one of my boards that it's not showing nothing. Rest of boards works ok.
You can see it at www.laganzua.net/foro_musica/

Board with problem is: "Busco la música del anuncio de... " (id=5.0).

Thanks...

Which RSS Reader/Aggregators can be used?
Google Reader for example doesn't work.

giving an address like
http://www.mysite.com/smf/index.php?action=.xml;board=1;type=rss
it is stored as
http://www.mysite.com/smf/index.php?action=.xml;type=rss

id_board parameter is removed. This happen with all rss reades I tryied (client software or web based).

Should work with all readers unless it is a bug with SMF. Since it is just an xml link to the rss feed of the board.

If it isn't working properly, please open your "BoardIndex.template.php" file. Find the mod snippet. In tone of the lines you'll see a link code that looks something like this:

&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" /></a>

Remove the "type=rss" from the link code.

and it just desappear the icon,

what can I do?

VBGamer,

Good job on the mod, but you need to take a lesson from me here about file naming conventions, you can't put just any special characters or spaces in a filename and expect satisfactory results...

All I did was change the .zip filename from feed+icon.zip to feed_icon.zip.... problem solved, SMF 2.0 RC2 won't recogognize your currently named file as a legitimate module...

For custom themes you will need to follow the instructions manually to install it on the theme. Or you can uninstall and then reinstall use the package manager's install on other themes option.

OK I have the RSS icon against each board and IT WORKS!

Is there any way I can create a feed that is a composite of the last 20 posts in the forum so that members can subscribe to a "Daily digest" so they can get an idea of which topics are active.  Just one compostie file rahter than 20 individual items.  I can then create an RSS icon in one of my "read only threads - Members news" and use this feed property as the url.

RSS only works if they have access to that board. And for staff only boards the would need to be logged in.

Thanks VB.

EDIT:

Some of the icons show next to the board name others are under the board name.

Is there a way of making all the icons go next to the board names?

Another mod edited that code looks like twitter mod?

<div style="float: right; width: 8%; text-align: right">

            </div>
            <div style="clear: both"></div><b><a href=""></a>&nbsp;

Which caused rss to be pushed down.

You have another mod that is causing that to occur mostly like I seen this happen with the twitter mod inserts other code

I installed this for v2 RC3 on the Blackrain V3 skin, and the RSS Feed Image .png does not come through. It just says "rss" next to each board name. When I clicked uninstall, it did not remove that name. If I click install again, it will add yet another "rss" next to the existing "rss" text link.

Can you please tell me how to manually edit the template so I can use the .png you provided, or can you tell me how to get rid of it altogether if that's not possible? It's really annoying to have a text link called "rss" next to every board name, because people accidentally click that.

Right click on the RSS text it should tell you the image path of the broken image then just upload it there.

Fixed, thanks. If I ever want to get rid of the package for whatever reason (maybe upon a board upgrade), how would I do that? The uninstall is no longer available because it didn't work the first time.

I would like to use this to detect any new posts made in any section of my forums. It only picks up the post in the specified thread, and not from its child boards, how could I accomplish this?
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards (Updated for SMF 2.0 RC3!)

This mod will not do that. Only adds an icon.

Just so I am clear on this...
My forum has 3 levels, like most: Main>Sub>Child and all the subs and child boards have that icon.
I can use an rss feed on a Sub forum, but it won't pick up any new posts in the Child forum. I have to use the rss link for that specific child forum.
So, is it possible to have it detect new posts in the child forum from a Sub rss feed link? Or better yet, is there a way to put a rss feed link on the Main forum page that would detect new posts in the Sub and Child section? That is my current issue.

Do you have any advice on how to get the RSS icon to display if I am on SMF 1.1.13? I tried manually copying the icon file to the new modded theme/images directory but that doesn't work. In fact, I copied that file into multiple places but it isn't taking.  All I keep getting is the "rss" text.

I read this single mod is supposed to work for both 1.1 and 2.0. But that does not seem to be the case.

Any clues?  Thanks.

Yes, that was quite helpful. I feel stupid for not thinking of it. The problem was I thought the file was actually being copied into the directory when it really wasn't.  I actually had to gain root access to copy the file inside.

All is well and it looks great!

Having an issue using the package manager to install this mod on 2.0 Gold.  It uploads the zip file but when I click install,  it gives me  "500 Internal Server Error".  I have quite a few mods installed so it may be effected by the others, I will do a manual install since it's only a couple changes.

is there any way the RSS would update with the new TOPICS instead of the posts? i find it a bit weird that i get my reader filled with the new posts, and i would just like to change it to new topics only.

Sorry, I was afraid it was just me being thick...  I identified the two files where this mod made changes from the parse thing: ./Themes/default/BoardIndex.template.php and ./Themes/default/MessageIndex.template.php then edited the RSS looking bit in both files adding ;sa=news after the type=rss as per this marvellous topic (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0).  I was rather pleased with myself when I was finished  8).  I'd still like to find a way to show the most recently updated topics rather than recently created, but it's looking good :D

Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards

Might have found a bug (SMF 2.1 RC1)

The board index normally lists the board names inside of an anchor. Like this:

<div class="info">
     <a class="subject mobile_subject" href="https://www.forumname.com/index.php?board=2.0" id="b2">
Board title
<p class="board_description mobile_display"></p>
     </a>
    <p class="board_description"></p>
</div>

Note where the anchor closes. When you ad this mod, it puts the RSS icon and its link right after the "board title", before the "<p class" but importantly, before the anchor closes. So it's an anchor inside an anchor, which is invalid HTML.

I'm seeing inconsistent results (one FF instance shows the RSS icons, another on another computer doesn't) and was trying to troubleshoot, and came across this.

A second, weirder thing that is most certainly me not understanding how things work: the modifications to BoardIndex.template.php are "taking", but not the modifications to MessageIndex.template.php. I mean, the changes are done to the file on the server, but not appearing in the resulting source when viewing the messages inside of a given board. So even on the Firefox computer that is showing the RSS iconds for theboard index, there are none on the message index. Now, you're going to ask me: are you using a non-default theme? And yes, I am (Cleo). So here's where you educate me and I become smarter: in the files for the theme, there is neither a MessageIndex.template.php nor a BoardIndex.template.php file. So I assume then just the default ones are used...? And the default/MessageIndex.template.php is getting modified, so.... *scratches head*.  Another theme I have installed.... Lunarfall... does have both of those files, and when you go to install the RSS mod you're given the option to apply to that theme's files as well, so it makes sense.

Anyway, feel free to pull a Ygritte, tell me "you know nothing", beat me with a cluestick and hopefully I learn something in all this. Thanks!

(PS: don't waste time worrying about why this one Firefox isn't displaying the RSS icons... I'm sure it's a boneheaded add-on blocking it... I'll figure it out eventually).

I see this issue. That board is not open for guests. You can't have an RSS feed for private board.

Yes that works but your board 7 is private http://theodyssey.cc/index.php?action=.xml;board=7;type=rss so that won't work.

Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards

It's not. You need a reader its either a desktop or mobile application.

Search on google how RSS works
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 06:12:45 PM
yes ok..but I say the mod so it works ??
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 06:19:52 PM
The mod is working fine. SMF can't make RSS feeds for boards that you hide from guests. *You* can see it because you're logged in but people who use RSS normally won't be logged in so it won't work for them.
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 06:21:39 PM
yes but in fact it must work for who is logged in and I wanted to understand if it worked
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 06:27:03 PM
It will work for people logged in, if they can see the board you mention.

It will not work for people not logged in. But most programs that do RSS *won't be logged in* and cannot log in.
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 06:28:37 PM
so if they are registered, but do not have the unregistered open site?
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 06:34:44 PM
It doesn't matter if they are registered.

No RSS program can log in to SMF to read a feed if not visible to guests. None. Doesn't matter if they are registered, the RSS cannot log in as them.
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 06:35:45 PM
Can you explain to me how to make it visible to guests too?
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 07:12:26 PM
Admin > Boards > click on the board, tick 'guests', hit save.

Then guests will be able to see all the posts in that board.
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 07:15:14 PM
but it is already set up like this, the categories can be seen by the guests
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 08:11:15 PM
Board 7 cannot.
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 08:12:49 PM
for example board index.php?board=12.0
12 work?
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 08:24:15 PM
12 works; 12 is open to guests. 7 is not.
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: goldenstudios on April 25, 2020, 08:25:51 PM
7 for the staff but 12 open ... you can show me the result? on the screen?
Title: Re: RSS Feed Icon for boards
Post by: Arantor on April 25, 2020, 08:42:30 PM
Here you go.

If board 7 is for staff, you *CANNOT* make it work with RSS. Not possible.

I'm having trouble/errors with sub categories and had already posted in this other thread (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=579508.0) and followed the trail to here...lol!

The errors in the link above point to MessageIndex.template.php line 428 which shows:

', $board['name'], '&nbsp;<a href="' . $scripturl . '?action=.xml;board=' . $board['id'] . ';type=rss"><img src="' . $settings['images_url'] . '/rss.png" alt="rss" />
I'm using SMF 2.1RC4

No install errors! Just the errors when after creating a sub category and clicking on the parent category.

I do have your SMF Gallery mod installed... so I'm wondering if maybe its conflicting with this mod?

Bug report: markup is missing the closing tags on the anchors for the RSS links.

See: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?msg=4121791

The example shows the markup for MessageIndex.template.php, but the same problem exists in the markup for BoardIndex.template.php.

For non-default themes, it's needed to copy rss.png image to /theme/images folder.

SMF 2.1.2

Not sure if it matters or not but my RSS feeds point to /index.php?action=.xml;type=rss but according to this Tip/Trick (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009.0) it should point to /index.php?action=.xml;type=rss2.

Does it matter?

Edit: The only difference I see is:

RSS
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<rss version="0.92" xml:lang="en-US">

RSS2
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<rss version="2.0" xml:lang="en-US" xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">

Thanks,
Shades 8)
