Simple Machines would like to announce today the opening of our second Theme Contest, to give our community members the challenge to create some new and exiting themes to show how nice and perhaps, exotic SMF can be.
To enter the contest, all you have to do is create a theme for the 1.1 line. You can edit as many template files as you need. A submitted theme should not be just a color edit, but should show what SMF is capable of. Team members are exempt from participating to aid in preventing bias, SMF Friends however are welcome to enter.
A winning theme will be decided based on two criteria; Originality and Overall Look. Try to create something with both of those in mind and make sure to keep an even balance. First the team will vote for finalists, then those finalists will be placed in a public vote where an overall winner will be determined.
You will have exactly two months from the timestamp of this post to register your interest in this topic and then produce the theme. If you're new to creating themes, don't be discouraged, new themes can sometimes be the best! Web Standards and testing in popular browsers will be helpful to your submission. And don't forget we may provide helpful hints and coding tricks as well.
To enter the contest as a participant, just submit your theme to the theme site (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes) like normal. All themes posted during the duration of this contest will be entered into the contest, so you are allowed to submit as many themes as you wish.
Overall Contest Rules:- Must be your own work
- Must be compatible with SMF 1.1
- Must comply with all current Theme Approval Guidelines (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=197350.0) (view this topic for links to localized translations)
- Be cross-browser compatible
- Cannot be a simple color change
- Cannot have any PHP, XHTML or Javascript Errors
- Team Members are ineligible of winning, SMF Friends are welcome to enter however.
Prizes:
The Grand Prize winner will receive a free one year Charter Member Subscription (http://simplemachines.org/charter) or one year extension to an existing charter subscription, the theme will be added to the Featured Theme rotation and their choice of book from O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com).
The first runner up will also have their themes added into the Featured Theme Rotation, and also a book from O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com) as well.
The second runner up will also receive a book from O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com).
Happy Designing!
Simple Machines
Can this be done in partnerships?
Like one person does the coding and other does the graphics?
If you mention on description then yes, however if you get placed third then you are both welcome to fight over whom gets the book :P
Yes, it'll amuse us greatly. ;)
What if someone in partnerships win the first prize, what will happen with the Charter memberships?
The same. You guys split the prizes amongst yourselves.

Note: We will not be arbitrating disputes if you submit a theme as a partnership and win.
Good luck all. :) I look forward to seeing submissions! Hopefully this will give for a bit of a boost of nice quality themes!
Good luck bros,
This will help us finding new more qualified themes, This is the best side of theme contest I guess :D
May we submit themes that we've already created?
QuoteSimple Machines would like to announce today the opening of our second Theme Contest, to give our community members the challenge to create some new and exiting themes to show how nice and perhaps, exotic SMF can be.
Per the quoted part you can see it should be new theme.
Indeed. The themes submitted must be entirely new ones. Updated themes do not count.
Great another fun contest. :D I hope a lot of people come around and partipate.
When will the contest end? And can we submit more than 1 theme?
Both questions are answered in the first post. The contest will end in two months (18th April) and you can submit as many themes as you like.
If someone's out of ideas of what to make, I'd be happy to tell you what I'd like to have made for my website, hrhrhr.
Idea: Wouldn't it be kinda cool if the winners could also be rewarded with 'medals'? See example here (http://wc3campaigns.net/showthread.php?t=80220) (On TDR's profile, the fish and the critter, further down on Mc !, the chimaera). I'm sure anyone who won such a contest wouldn't mind letting it show on their profile.
Best of luck to all!
we have 3 confirmed on our list of approved so far and many awaiting user response, please understand that we will be checking everything in the theme, just as if it was not a competition. I am also sorry but ports from other softwares do not count.
I would also like to add that Default Variations are not allowed as per the rules.
Indeed. 100% original works only. ;)

So.. not important win or lose :)
I wish to enter the contest.
There's nothing to stop you from doing so. You just submit a theme (or twelve :P) to the theme site.
I would like to join this. I submitted my theme, ART today. I don't think I am going to be available to make another theme for two months. I believe that my new theme will be good enough to be appreciated :) I didn't know the contest when I made it, but let's say I made it for this competittion. :)

Edit: sorry April 18?
Definitely not. The Customization team will need some time to go through the submissions done on the last day and approve them. Depending on the number of submissions that could take a day or more alone.
I believe the team will be narrowing down the field after the submissions are over. This will probably take a few days to a week.
It'll then take another day or so to setup the public vote.

Thanks for the information @Thantos.
Please don't see this as a negative but ......... with 2.0 coming along, why make a contest for the 1.1 series??
Bob
Because there is still time for 2.0 To be public and 99% users use SMF 1.1.x
Are there any restrictions in features a theme might add?

Like Dragooon said, 2.0 is not stable at the moment, nor is it public, and there's still plenty to do with it.

Nice Stuff here . . .
Let me see what the Geeks can do . . .
I will be downloading guides to create my teams now,
I urgently need SMF 2.0, being the winner will get me that, init?
Effectively yes, but that's just one bonus of the charter membership, there are other bonuses along side it. ;)
You are welcome to produce the theme for 2.0 - but only the 1.1 version will be reviewed for the contest.
Hi,
I would like to join this contest with my new themes in these months
Theme for contest submitted --

Crip - if your theme had a cowboy in it, it would instantly remind me of a 20 season TV series of the same name. ;) hehe.
Wowwww, if Crip is in this contest, it will be very difficult to defeat him. (I have three favorites. One is Crip, and the second one is Fussilet, and the last one is me :) ) My theme is not ready yet.
I am sorry for the second message. However, I made my best work (Actually, I realized that I need to work on Firefox a little bit. ), and this is going to be my final job. I want to quit theme writing now, because I need to study to finish my PhD. :) Everybody can see the theme here http://www.etkiweb.com/dizayn/index.php?theme=23;language=english :)

Hmm, no, there is some objectivity in theme and visual design. Someone may prefer red more than green, but there are some colour combinations and contrasts that should not be made.

Very good explanation bro.. I was going to try to say the same things too.
Hi, i have a question...
i don't like the use of tables in v. 1.x ....
will version 2.0 use a tableless-markup like the new phpbb3 does?
because if i create a new theme, i want to be able to use it in v2 without many problems, and converting a table-design to a table-less standard will be much work...
so.. is there anything planned on improving the themes on v2? if yes, i'd go for a table-less design right now (and try my luck in the contest), if not.. well.. i won't ;)
greetings :)
Yep that's the plan to have a table-less layout for the default theme.
oh great, thanks a lot :)
i think i'll give it a shot when i have some free time from the agency :)
greets
Another question about the icons...
is it possible to use freeware (GPL) icons when crediting them?
or do i have to paint them myself... well actually i'm not an icon designer :O
i guess they'd look pretty... poor :(
greets
Yes you can, though check with the icons' authors to see if they'd like you to GPL the whole of your theme.
i have no problem with GPLing my theme :)
thanks
When you say completely original, does that mean it cannot have any elements of the current SMF Default theme?
(I'm not good at making the little icons and such for help and calendar / forum stats)
Well, we dont mean 100% original. So you can use icons, and such from the default theme if you want.

Here are a couple of screenshots of things I played with earlier today - hopefully they'll give some people some ideas on neat ways to make the SMF themes stretch the limits :)
New Help Windows
(http://www.josephfung.ca/docs/adminStuff.JPG) (http://www.josephfung.ca/docs/adminStuff.JPG)
Using jQuery and Thickbox to replace the help pop-ups with Javascript Divs...this gives a very elegant over-lay style effect, and isn't blocked by pop-up blockers.
Topic Visualizations
(http://www.josephfung.ca/docs/messageIndex.JPG) (http://www.josephfung.ca/docs/messageIndex.JPG)
We can change up the way the message index is displayed, to give more graphical representations of information. The circles on the left use size to depict the number of replies, colour to indicate new/read status, and the transparency to indiate how many replies there were spread over the age of the topic (i.e. a topic with 50 replies in 1 day is much hotter than a topic with 50 replies over a year).
Any other neat visualization ideas you may have?
I like that Joseph, though sometimes it is useful to be able to switch easily between the help window and the main window (for example the time format).

Very true - I don't think it's an ideal solution (i.e., I'd probably recommend making it non-modal) but it's a neat proof-of-concept :)

Thanks, After Updating begins they might be half that -- but i doubt it. Lmao!
I think the best candidates are Crip and Fussilet to win :) They are making really nice themes. To be honest, Fussilet's last work, blue vista is his best, and really good. In my opinion, blue vista, iroyal and crip's covboy theme will be the best themes for the contest.
Thank you very much for your kind words ;)

thank you friend;)
Did I beat the deadline.. ??
Since it's not 18th April yet, I'm gonna say yes. :P
It only matters about the submission date, not the approval date. So as long as the theme is submitted by some point tomorrow, you'll be fine.
Great I made it..that was a close one. :P

Depends on whos time zone you are counting :P

The Contest is now closed, please stand by for voting
We will now begin the team vote where Team Members can vote on various factors such as layout and originality for the final eight(-ish).
All themes submitted after 1:00 PM BST (GMT +1) will not be included
Good Luck to all.
Good Luck to all ;)
Indeed, best of luck to all those who have entered.
And note, even if you don't win, I'm sure all the new and exciting themes are much appreciated by SMF Users.
Plus well done the to Customize team theme staff who undoubtadly have had many many new themes to approve (theres nothing like making more work for yourself :P )
some stats
55+ themes where submitted during the comp
2 were removed by the author
45 have made it to staff voting
Most submitted were by crip
Crip also became largest theme designer with most themes on theme site
The congratulations Crip ;)
Good luck lol , I would vote for crip and fussilet if I could :P
You might be able to do so. When the team vote is over. :P

Quality, of course.

This is cute, it is not an open theme for public , right ?
Unfortunately not. :(
Aäron, I think it is fireboard style, and as smf is powerful enoguh to turn into any existing board look out, theme experts had better try new styles , like this one .
I hope they do start

That design is taking is place, and becoming very popular in many forum platforms...
Btw, I love the approach that panic make in his new theme, the recent topics in a tab, is another solution to that design, I just love it! take a look http://forum.padexx.de/
Panic has been my favourite designer for quite a bit of time now.
Yeah, been a fan of Panic themes too, though Bikken theme's (http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?action=profile;u=113124) continues to wow me more and more. Each new one, just seems to progressively out do the last. But Eren, you'll always be my favorite themester :P
I think Mr. Bloc designs beat all of the above. :P
