Currently, we have fully working converters for the following softwares, to convert to SMF 1.0.x and SMF 1.1:

Request for improvement to YaBB Gold SP 1.x converter:

* Allow conversion of attachments

(The current convertor does not convert attachments.)

The latest version of XMB is 1.9.1 Nexus, although I haven't had a chance to test the current converter with this version of XMB, so it might still work.

If you would like to request a new converter, improvements to an existing converter, more versions converted from a certain software, or would like to report that one of the converters works for more versions than described, please post a reply here.

Any word on the Zorum converter?
We could really use it.

I'd like to put in a request for a converter!  I use a less known board callled eblah (www.eblah.com) and I'd LOVE to convert it over to SMF. eblah is a great message board but I have come to really like all the features of this board (SMF).  I know that eblah has a conveter to convert from Yabb (not sure which versions) to eblah, I could get that code to someone to see what would be involved??  Thanks!!

::)

I don't think your going to find alot of people wanting to convert that. There is only 4 copies in use that I could find on google, and 2 of them are mine.

Kind of makes me wonder if it's worth it to keep it alive.

[Unknown] - I did a test the other day, and it does appear that the XMB 1.8 Partagium converter also works fine with 1.9.x Nexus, although I haven't had a chance to fully test it yet (haven't tested it with attachments or sub-boards). I will have more time to test it next week and will let you know what I find.

I want to convert an old forum based on MS Access into SMF
It would be handy to have a script to import a flatfile (csv) for topics only:

File formatted something like:
MessageID¥RootID¥Date¥Author¥Subject¥Message

Authors could be guest only.
Is there any present converter that could be modified like this or does anyone have a script doing this?

I need a converter for ubb.threads 6.4.x. I'll be happy to act as a test board for it as well...

I suspect if you created a working ubb.threads converter, you'd have a lot of converts. Ubb.threads has really hit the wall in terms of providing useful, timely, and bug-free newer versions.

It says "2.x.x", so I would assume that includes 2.3.x. If it doesn't, I apologize.

I too need the ubb.threads 6.4.x(2) conveter. I purchased and then tried to install their new version and they can not even convert their own forum. BYE BYE infopop!

I  am willing to pay for the converter if anybody has some free cycles!

I upgraded my YABB 1.4 board to YABB2. When I found Simple Machines, I liked it much, much better. I took down by YABB 2 board and started fresh with a SMF board But, I have about 10,000 posts in YABB2 format. I would just like a utility that will convert the YABB2 posts to SMF so they can be added to my existing SMF board. I don't care about converting members, passwords, or anything else. YABB2 RC2  has been released (final release is just around the corner) and the devs say that there won't be any further changes to the message format.

It would be so nice if there was a convertor for Mercuryboard v. 1.1.3.
I would only need my topics and polls but forums would also be great.

If anyone can help me.. i would be saved!

I would LOVE it if someone created a converter for the Web-App program (a flatfile Perl portal system).  http://www.web-app.org/ ... Including the forum boards/threads/posts *AND* if a all possible any and all members/profiles/IM's....

Anybody out there willing to take a stab?

Hi,

Although there is a coverter for phpBB2 there doesn't seem to be a converter that will work with phpNuke.

I've tried the methods suggested on the forum here without success. Has anyone got any ideas or is there anyone writtinf a script for this ??

rotor, couldn't you convert the phpBB board in Php-Nuke to regular phpBB first and then run the phpBB to SMF converter?

Next, on a completely different topic, as of tonight, I've been given the task to convert a punBB board to SMF for a small private forum community to which I belong.  I'm one of the admins and we originally chose to go with punBB back in like December 2004 from a phpBB board in Php-Nuke that was running on one member's server because the guy basically disappeared and we couldn't get ahold of him.  We just wanted a simple board at that time that didn't have a bunch of options so it would supposedly be easier to run.  If I had it to do over, I would have obviously chosen SMF back then, but I didn't realize that the extra components SMF has doesn't really make it more complex to manage lol

Anyway, to make the long story short, I have to convert this board per request of the other admin to SMF because the guy who has the forum now also isn't around to fix things when they go broken.  The version is a highly modded punBB 1.2.3.  I dont care so much about the mods, I just care about getting all the posts and perhaps the polls.  We have a backup every few days via a cron to my machine of the database, and I'm not sure any longer if I have access to the server the punBB is running on.  So I would love to see a punBB converter if possible and be really grateful to anyone who can do one or if SMF itself could provide one.

Thanks.

I'm currently using myBB... migrated from phpBB... and I would have to agree. After taking a look at SMF, I am kicking myself for not migrating to SMF. I'm starting a new forum and I will be using SMF right out the gate with it. It's amazing how feature-rich SMF is compared to other software out there.
Title: Re: Converter Requests?

Why can't also SMF be the first to convert data into a common data format ? What I know there is no such one today, then just make one with XML which all should be able to read in case someone wanna use other forum software.

With a common data format also all import and export would be much more easy since you only have to respect one format instead of hundreds.
Title: Re: Converter Requests?
Post by: [Unknown] on May 30, 2005, 12:47:18 PM
Because no one will agree on what a "common format" is.  Some forums are threaded, some forums aren't.  Everyone stores things slightly differently.

Look at Snitz.  Look at phorum.

  • SMF 1.0.x (to merge two forums)

I'm intrigued by the idea to merge two SMF forums, but how exactly would it work? I mean, I'd assume that it'd merge two databases into one, but what about if a member used the same username on each, for example the main admin, would it take the two users and merge the accounts into one along with the posts and threads, or would they be two separate users?

The merger would not support having people with accounts the same name as on the other forum.... but it's a complicated process.

The phpNuke converter should do everything already. I wrote it with 7.7 but it should work on 7.5 and 7.6 I'd guess.

Have you provided the converter somewhere as I'm not finding mention of it in search...

I have 1.1 due to being a Charter member, and I posted last page about being asked to convert a forum that I'm one of the admins. I would greatly appreciate the converter, but didn't repost asking here due to waiting to see if anyone decided to do one or not...

LordStriker,

The phpNuke converter should do everything already. I wrote it with 7.7 but it should work on 7.5 and 7.6 I'd guess.

Hey Grudge,

I checked the downloads section for the converters, but cannot see one for phpNuke.

Where could I find the phpNuke converter?

If you can send me a database dump, partial or structure is fine, I can probably work it out - at least for 1.1, if not a version for 1.0 as well.

If someone could send me some data for OpenBB, I've got a partial converter going for it as well.  Please send any data to [email protected], compressed if possible.

Why can't also SMF be the first to convert data into a common data format ? What I know there is no such one today, then just make one with XML which all should be able to read in case someone wanna use other forum software.

With a common data format also all import and export would be much more easy since you only have to respect one format instead of hundreds.

This is a pretty cool idea!  And since Unknown mentioned that there is no agreed upon format between forums, why not create one from scratch, based on SMF: "SMF XML format".  :D

You'd be defining a vendor-independant data format for message boards, kind of like what Netscape & UserLand did for RSS.  The competitive advantage is that you'd be the first to define this format and all others must conform to your specification in order to be properly compliant.

Title: Re: Converter Requests?

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but I'd say DVD's are fairly successful.   How many VHS movies do you see these advertised days? :P  Anyway, it wasn't Sony alone that developed the DVD specification, it was the DVD Forum:

"The DVD Forum is an international organization composed primarily of hardware and software companies that use and develop the DVD format. It was initially known as the DVD Consortium when it was founded in 1995.

Ten companies initially founded the organization:

Hitachi Ltd.
Matsu******a Electric Industrial Co
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics N.V.
Sony Corporation
Thomson
Time Warner Inc.
Toshiba Corporation
Victor Company of Japan (JVC)
Today, the DVD Forum has over 230 members."

- "DVD Forum" Computer Desktop Encyclopedia. Computer Language Company Inc., 2005. Answers.com GuruNet Corp. June 29, 2005. http://www.answers.com/topic/dvd-forum

Almost all 10 of those original companies are still doing well today, 10 years later.  :D

I don't have a DVD drive, so nope. :P

Anyway, DVD-R was created before DVD+R.  Instead of competing, they could have just upgraded the DVD-R's first specification, just like what HTML, XML, and even SMF does with every new release. :P

How big is your board? How much do you *need* converting? E-Blah P9 is a perl board so the converter is much harder to write. I've just managed to get it installed and it's not impossible to write a converter for - but it will be a lot of work. If I could find time to write it I'd need you to assist with testing it as my test board wouldn't have the amount of data required for a good test.

Which version are you using, specifically?  How many posts do the two forums have?  Can you try this query, please:

SELECT COUNT(ID_MSG)
FROM smf_messages;

What is phpMyAdmin? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=21919.0)

This will tell you how many posts have been converted.  If the number is increasing, the converter is taking forever but still working.  If it's not, it has bombed.

I'm afraid not - converting themes would be very difficult to do automatically. That said, if he's a designer, I'd think he would easily be able to adapt to SMF's system as a template for a whole page is in one nicely commented file...

I wish! lol  I doubt he would take the time to convert it.  Sort of a hot designer and probably doesn't have the time, maybe not even the interest since he seems to favor phpbb.  BUT... he gave me permission to convert it, and it's an OUTSTANDING theme!  I don't have the skills to do the conversion myself, though.  His only stipulation, naturally, is to keep his copyright/credits and links.

You can see it here on one of my (innactive) forums:  http://www.ghostinthelens.com/inthedarkroom

He also has another awesome theme I use here (also innactive): http://www.thecorridors.com/darkinfinitum

But if I had the skills---heck yeah, I'd do it.  Beautiful themes, both of them.

LordStriker,

The phpNuke converter should do everything already. I wrote it with 7.7 but it should work on 7.5 and 7.6 I'd guess.

Where can this be downloaded?
I have fought for three days trying every trick suggested in the support threads and frankly, it's quite hard to decipher which ones of them work and which ones give errors. Obviously a lot of people have managed to convert their forums with the given instructions but I must be too dumb for it or something. I'd be thrilled if either a phpNuke converter  could be found from downloads (especially if there is one), or clear How-To instructions posted somewhere.

I'd be nice to have a convertor that will convert phpBB boards that have the category hierarchy mod installed.. this is a VERY popular mod so I think it would help a lot of people out. There are a couple different versions of it available however..... the original version (2.0.4) & the newest version (2.1.1).. these versions are quite different seeing as users can't just "upgrade" to 2.1.1 & they will need to rebuild their whole board so there probably is still a lot of users using 2.0.4 as well as 2.11... this is one of the reasons why I am considering moving to SMF as it already has all these features by default it seems. :)

Creating a convertor to work with these two versions would be awesome..... :)

Actually, there is an indirect way of converting EZBoard to SMF.  There is a converter out there to convert from EZBoard to phpBB.  You then convert from phpBB to SMF.

I'm in the process of converting a 200,000+ post EZBoard (indirectly) to SMF.  We're going live tomorrow night.   :D :D :D  It takes a while, but it works.  I'll dig up the info if anyone's interested...

My problem is:

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of phpBB2. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error MySQL gave was: SELECT command denied to user: '[email protected]' for table 'phpbb_users'

I have the solution!
You have two folders, one being the forum you need to convert from (A) , and a folder you need to convert to  (B).

You have two databases, one being say database_A and database_B

If you try converting, you'll get the error "...the MySQL account used does not have permissions to access it."

Solution: Export the tables from Database_B once its been freshly installed and import them to Database_A.  Its not pretty, but your tables will have a prefix to prevent overrighting, such as phpbb_ mb_ or smf_

Go to the settings/config.php file in the folder (B) which was tied to Database_B and tell it that it is now in Database_A

The reason is that the converter is ment to be done in the same database, but between different tables.  Dont know why, but that is the only solution if you get that problem.

Furthermore, for those whom want to convert from Mercuryboard, I fixed the converter!  I spent the day editing PHP and MYSQL code to bypass the smf_private_pms error.

Download the file and run it from the directory of the forum you want to be converted to.  It has been zipped with WinRar. (for those who only use Winzip to know)

It has a couple mysql errors at the very end but it sucessfully converts topics, ranks, usernames, profiles, avatars, boards, posts.. you name it!

I have no idea.. all my cats have a setting of "NULL" in the database.

I was thinking it might be used to specify whether it's a category or a forum, but since it's not used, I'll just ignore it...

MySQL is too picky :P

Open up the file, and look for that "IF((f.main_type IS NULL)" part. Remove the parentheses around "f.main_type IS NULL".

Well I changed this line from..

to..

IF(f.main_type = 'f', f.cat_id, f.forum_id) AS ID_PARENT,

Additionally.. I got this error below after it processed the boards successfully; it now has an issue with the topics..

Open up the SQL file in Notepad or another text editor

Find and remove
WHERE forum_main != '0'
Title: Re: Converter Requests?
Post by: dvd-man on December 07, 2005, 09:15:59 AM
Alright... done! :)

I also noticed however that "forum_main" is also referenced in "group access"; here is the respective section..

// This isn't a category is it?
$request2 = convert_query("
SELECT
forum_main
FROM {$from_prefix}forums
WHERE forum_id = '$row[ID_BOARD]'");
Title: Re: Converter Requests?
Post by: Oldiesmann on December 08, 2005, 10:34:42 AM
Since categories are stored in their own table in your version, you can safely remove that code and the two lines following it (the two lines after the blank one...).

Hmmmmm..... ok; now.. not sure what to make of this but I think we have an endless loop happening somewhere??

It said it was converting the board statistics or something but it was incomplete so it kept reloading (like it did with my forum posts).. but it seemed that the "start" variable it kept reloading to was always equal to 0.... I left it running for quite some time but it seemed just like an endless loop & since the start variable wasn't changing (like it did with the posts conversion) I assumed there was an issue??

Cheers!

That's a bug with the 1.1 converter - I had that same problem when I converted a standard phpBB install for someone. It doesn't appear to cause any problems though, because when I went to the board, the stats and everything were correct, so you should be able to ignore that issue.
Title: Re: Converter Requests?
Post by: dvd-man on December 13, 2005, 04:06:29 AM
Ok... but unless that is the last part of the conversion process then how will the script progress onto the next part to finish converting the board if it gets stuck in the loop & cannot continue on?

I have an Xsorbit v4 board with 500+ members, 52,000+ posts, 3,500+ topics, 13 Categories and 34 sub-boards. I've been aware for some time that it is showing severe signs of old age (and in need of a good general clean out). I've recently discovered SMF, and the wealth of new features it opens up to me, and excited by the 'new world' am planning on jumping ship.

I've read a lot about converting from various boards to SMF but nothing clearly listed for Xsorbit v4.

Perfect world sinerio would be to 'pick up' the entire board contents, membership, etc and 'drop' them into my new SMF board. However I'm realistic in that might not be practical (possible?).

Can anyone offer any advice on how I might transfer my board?

Thanks in advance, Michael

That particular xsorbit system is based on YaBB, but if they don't give you access to the data files there's not much we can do to help you convert.

I have wowbb, although the BB is solid, its service and support sucks. I have been liking SMF so much I want to port my 10,000 user board to SMF.  What kid of data would you guys want to make the converter.  I'm willing to shed some bucks if you guys are willing to take this as a priority.

I would be happy if I could convert the userbase at least to SMF... but it would rock if it could be the whole shebang.  I have wowbb 1.65, so what you need? a copy? data files? and exported db? let me know so i can send it to ya.

Thanks;

My problem is that my host will not allow a database user to have access to more than one database. That means the converter won't work as it assumes you have access to both databases from one login.
Any ideas how to tackle this problem? Is there an alternative converter available? Any pointers for where to start if I need to modify the converter myself?
Thanks!

You can use the same database for two forums. Set up SMF to the same database and use different prefixes, probably you won't change the default value.

I am trying to convert from a "blogger" blog to SMF version 1.1 RC2.

I have been able to get the blogger data exported into two tables like this:

-----------
blogs (uniqueID_blog, date_time, title, author)
comments (uniqueID_comment, uniqueID_blog, date_time, author, text)
-----------

Is it possible to import this data into SMF as regular forum topics with replies? (So the forum topic is the blog post, and the "replies" would be all the comments from that post.)

I'm not concerned about preserving comment author info, like email/url, etc...

Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks!

I would like to be able to convert the content of my Drupal website (mainly user profiles and posts) into an SMF database.  I already have a Drupal forum, but would like to port all Drupal forum content over to SMF.

As an added bonus, I would like to translate all Drupal news posts and comments into the SMF forum as well.

Request:
drupal user's profiles
    #usernames/passwords/email/register date
drupal user's content
    #comments to news posts
    #replies to forum topics
drupal general content
    #published stories

Hi,

I just converted my 1.3 final to SMF 1.0.6 using the "official" SMF converter plus my own utility to fix missing topics. Now it looks good, except missing polls which is the next to fix during the weekend. Than you can easily upgrade 1.0.6 to 1.1

Drop me a mail if you want to give a try to my utility.

Hello,

I too am trying to convert from IPB 1.3 to SMF 1.1 RC2 but it appears that the SMF convert .php files are designed for SMF 1.05

Any help?

Hmm. Maybe make another install using SMF 1.0.6 run the convertor then convert the SMF 1.0.6 board to SMF 1.1 RC2

Has anyone successfully done this? I just fully installed SMF 1.1 and don't want to have to redo everything.

Regards... Béla

Thank you for your answer, I have lots of problem during the conversion :

You're using an older version of that converter... Go back to the topic where you got that and look for the most recent one.

Err, I just happen to encounter the same problem right now...  And I've been long searching for the right 'files'.  (convert.php from grudge -i think- and the .sql-file is actually yours Oldiesman, so that's why I thought you might help...?)

Are you using the sql file from this post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=65644.msg452971#msg452971)? If so, you're probably using a different version of the hack than that converter was made for and I'll have to make you a custom one...

Can't you just backup the data before you upgrade?
Title: Re: Converter Requests?
Post by: Trekkie101 on March 15, 2006, 06:32:13 PM
When I backup, I get all data in the database, this inclues mods that havent been removed from the database (your now playing mod stays for example) and some people would like to remove that.
Title: Re: Converter Requests?
Post by: Oldiesmann on April 11, 2006, 01:57:35 PM
Uninstalling the now playing mod should remove the extra column that it creates... I try hard to make sure the uninstall process removes everything, although many mods don't.

Where can I find the SMF to SMF converter (to merge forums)?  It's listed as a beta on the first page of this thread, but I can't find a link to it anywhere...

I looked under Converter Downloads (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?converters), the 1.1 Converters (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=38966.0) thread, and ran a search on the forums, but couldn't find a link to it.  Help?

There isnt one yet, though it would've been useful a little while ago for me. In fact I could still do with an SMF importer for posts/threads/PM's. (my users are done)

The e107 convertor appears to be only for the 0.6xx versions of e107.  I've posted in another thread about this and had to make some "adjustments" along the conversion route... it imports all the user data and Forum titles... but not individual posts.

If I have any luck I'll drop another reply here  ;D

Here i have a RC2 SMF forum with a wow theme i made, and i want to merge the data from the old to our RC2, or convert the old to a SMF one. Maybe this is a request for a new converter, i can't quite get that overview as i dont know the uk forum there.

I have a proboards forum and I'm thinking about switching.
Although I might have to wait until they go to version 5, they say they will start using MySQL then.
This forum just looks more powerful and I think it's better than phpbb.
I also don't have enough money for vb.
Only problem is I can't code in php yet and I don't know how to host websites and forums as of yet.

Sorry but i think i'm noob... Very noob !

I can't convert my phpbb forum to smf one, i currently use phpbb 2.0.21 and smf 11 rc2.
the Phpbb converter advertise me:
QuoteWarning: mysql_fetch_assoc(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /var/www/sdb/f/a/cemeacentre/phpbb2_to_smf.php on line 124
Warning: mysql_free_result(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /var/www/sdb/f/a/cemeacentre/phpbb2_to_smf.php on line 125
The installation of SMF in the path you specified is not a version this converter can deal with. If it is older than SMF 1.0, you need to upgrade first. If it is newer, you need to use a different converter.
Anyone can help me?

Thanks a lot (i appologize if it's not the good section)

Anything is possible. The problem with non-db boards is the immense work needed to scrape the files and format the posts correctly. Even flat-file (YaBB) is easier.

If I supply a mysql dump or access to the database, can someone come up with a converter for Nuke Platinum 7.6b4? Or, at least for the phpbb forums, currently updated to 2.0.21? It's based on Nuke 7.6. I tried running the nuke to smf converter listed for Nuke 7.7 (all I could find), and the converter doesn't even recognize the supplied sql file for the nuke conversion. Thanks.
