Dear Members,
Simple Machines has released our first patch (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=patches) to the 2.1.x line of SMF, bringing our latest release version to
2.1.1.
- Restores support for PHP 7.0–7.2
- Fixes a minor bug in the Package Manager
How to update to 2.1.1If you are running version
2.1.0, you can update your forum to the latest version by using the package manager. You should see the update notification in the admin panel notifications and in the package manager, which will allow you to download and install the patch seamlessly. If you do not see the notification about the patch, please run the scheduled task "Fetch Simple Machines files" from the Scheduled Tasks page (Admin > Maintenance > Scheduled Tasks).
For other install and upgrade options, please see below.
Since SMF 2.1.1 comes soon after SMF 2.1.0, which was released only a few days ago, we are including a copy the SMF 2.1.0 release announcement for your convenience:
Simple Machines is pleased to announce the official release of the long awaited SMF 2.1.
This release marks the transition of SMF 2.1 into the current
stable release of SMF. This means that:
- SMF 2.1 is now the recommended version for use on live production forums. We encourage everyone to start planning for an upgrade to SMF 2.1.
- SMF 2.0 remains supported and will continue to receive security updates for the foreseeable future, but this release officially marks the end of further 2.0 development. We will release a separate announcement for any future changes to SMF 2.0's status.
Notable changes in 2.1The changes between SMF 2.0.x and SMF 2.1 are too many to count, but here are a few highlights:
- New features for users
- A new WYSIWYG editor, SCEditor (http://www.sceditor.com/)
- Real-time alerts in addition to email notifications
- A new default theme with full support for mobile devices
- Draft messages (you can save & resume later)
- Mentions using @name syntax
- Drag & drop attachments
- Attachments can be embedded directly into post text
- New features for moderators and administrators
- An improved Administrator Control Panel
- Support for moderator groups, not just individuals
- Many security enhancements, including support for optional Two Factor Authentication.
- IPv6 support
- Designed with GDPR support
- New features for modification and theme authors
- A massive expansion of the number of integration hooks available
- More powerful BBCode possibilities
- Background tasks
- New capabilities in the Package SDK (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Category:Package_SDK)
You can learn more about the many new features and changes in SMF 2.1 here (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Differences_between_SMF_2.1_and_SMF_2.0).
How to install a new SMF 2.1 forumYou can install SMF 2.1 using the "Full Install" package from the Download (https://download.simplemachines.org/) page.
Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about installing (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Introduction_to_installing).
How to upgrade to SMF 2.1You can upgrade to SMF 2.1 from any previous version using the "Large Upgrade" package from the Download (https://download.simplemachines.org/) page.
Be aware that upgrading to SMF 2.1 will remove any modifications you may have installed on your existing SMF forum, and that SMF 2.1 is incompatible with custom themes designed for earlier versions of SMF. You will need to install new versions of those modifications and/or themes after upgrading. Many modifications and themes have already been updated by their authors to support SMF 2.1, but you may wish to check the status of individual modifications or themes before proceeding.
Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about upgrading (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading).
With this release we'd like to take the opportunity to recognize the effort and dedication of all the people who have volunteered their time to help the SMF project. We would like to thank everyone, past and present, who has contributed to the development of SMF over the past years.
Finally, as always, please do
not use this topic for support requests. You will receive a much quicker and better response by asking for help in the SMF 2.1.x Support (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=254.0) board.

thanks
Congrats on the 2.1 general release, team!
Now that the 2.1.x branch has been officially released, would it be worth on the mods forum having a way to show which ones are aimed at 2.1.x with any others being deemed to be aimed at 2.0.x ?

filter on version is in the left column.
There's no nice way to do it on the mods board though, which I know some people look at.
I seriously think this is worth reconsidering in the future to bring topic prefixes into the core.
great news, thanks for all the hard works :-*

It'll also be good for problem type threads as you'll be able to see that a problem is marked as solved. I've seen mentions of threads being marked as solved but I've never seen anything to indicate that a thread has been solved
Because the green tick on the list of topics is too subtle?
I upgraded our forum from RC2 to 2.1.1 and including backup taking, a little bit of debugging and some theme tweaks I think we were down for about 45mins.
Very smooth and 2.1.1 is already miles better than RC2.
Had some failures at the end of the upgrade but I just ran it again and it succeeded.
I did also have to upgrade our php from 7.3 to 7.4 to get over some utf8 conversion issues.
Well done guys and thanks again.
There is a check mark icon next to solved threads...
Big thanks to SMF Team. I have just upgraded my forum and everything works well.
sad to see this was not picked up when 2.1 was released and need for a patch so quickly, however excellent to see this being fixed so quickly and hope thatwe will see patches alot quicker when things need addressed.
Is this gold now?

2.1.1 is the current public release of the 2.1.x series.
the 2.1 series was publicly released and is out of Release Candidate stage, yes.
Okay, thank you.
Congrats! :D
Thank you to one and all who spent their time getting it to this stage
Amazing work everyone, the 2.1.x series definitely brings SMF way more into the modern future (style and UI wise).

Is there a fixed date for when the 2.0.x branch gets declared EOL?

Until 2.0.x gets declared EOL there'll probably a good few that won't upgrade to 2.1 It'll either be 2.0.x getting declared EOL or when hosts start to remove support for older versions of PHP. My gut feeling is that many hosts will soon remove any version of PHP below 7.4 and possibly some might even remove any 7.x versions once 8.2 comes out
Let's get back on topic please.

Great work guys, thank you. ;)
excellent news, thanks to all team members ;)
Thank you very much, excellent work!
I'm going to be using SMF on my new site. Excited that it's mobile friendly now!!!
Quote from: aaronhall on March 11, 2022, 07:34:18 PMI'm going to be using SMF on my new site. Excited that it's mobile friendly now!!!
I do with the mobile version showed our avatars.
The main issue with avatars on mobile is that mobile is much smaller, and the intent is to maximise the amount of space given to content.
It's easy to change, to suit personal preference. Minor CSS edits, really.
I didn't expect the new 2.1 core to move out of RC this year, was thinking of assessing XenForo at some point, so cool that this is finally ready for live environments! The upgrade went mostly OK, although the conversion from avatar linkage to static files gave me some trouble which means non-working links that were used externally. A few other hiccups I can work around, but the real work is porting all the custom stuff I've done over the years which I dreaded...
Anyway, thanks to the team for getting this out there!
Nice to see finally SMF 2.1.x moving.
Just wondering, looks like if I am using 2.0.19 I can't use the large upgrade to 2.1.1???
Do I really need to do a full install?

You can use the large upgrade 2.1.1. package. You do not need to do a full install, but an upgrade. Please see this link on how to upgrade your forum.
