Will most mods work properly, or should I wait for updated versions of them?
I use the default SMF theme.
Do you mean mods for 2.0 ??? Some will work but the majority have to be updated.
Yeah, I was just wondering if there is a simple way to tell wether or not they are likely to work.
I guess I'll just have to do some trial-and-error tests.
I'm waiting for SMF Gallery :(
You can safely bet right now that probably 85 % of the mods on the mod site will not work with the new beta. Especially if they have to make database changes.

if its on the mod site: theres an 85-95% chance it will not work until it is updated.
Also, are any of those mods I mentioned (above) now default features?
No I don't think so.
Actually I believe membergroup color legend and Font and Size Dropdown are both in 2.0. The functionality may be slightly different, but as you can see on this posting screen, there is a dropdown for both font and size and at the bottom of the board index on this forum there is a membergroup legend.
Yes, Membergroup Color Legend and the font and size dropdown on the post form are both default
Please be patient with mod authors.
It may take weeks (OR months) before mods are updated to 2.0. It isn't necessarily a quick thing to do. And for those of us with alot of mods, it can take a bit.
So far only 1 of my mods is confirmed for 2.0 beta 3 public in the mod site.

I see that 2.0 has auto-embed flash as a default option, but claims it is a security risk. Wouldn't that make your hack a security risk too, or is it a different thing?
SMF 1.1.x had this feature as well. The warning is there to remind you that turning it on could pose a security risk.
I believe the way Karl does the mod is done in a way so that it doesn't pose any kind of threat to your forum.
Rather than my mod I think seek2501 is referring to that in 1.1.x flash is disabled by default. But its enabled in 2.x
I was replying off of this part:
QuoteWouldn't that make your hack a security risk too, or is it a different thing?
Which seems to be claiming your mod could be a security risk, which I don't think it is as far as I know.
oh well. I blame tiredness ;) Or on awaiting the release of 2.0 with eager anticipation. :P
The difference between my mod and flash bbcode is
- My mod doesn't require bbcode to work, just post a link to youtube and it converts it automatically into an embedded video. (easier/quicker for users)
- Only allows flash to be embedded from specific sites, not any flash, hosted anywhere (which reduces the security risks alot).
As karl got to above, the SMF flash option just enables the [flash] bbcode. It does not auto-embed the flash links.
Mods will be updated in time. Give mod authors time to update their mods.
Though Charter Customizers and Teamies might have their mods ready. I know a few mods where approved that are 2.0 Beta 3 only.
Can say right now that TinyPortal mod will NOT work for a LONG time ahead with the new SMF 2.
So for those members that have TP and dont want to loose it, Dont install or upgrade to the new SMF version.
As mentioned in this thread, some mods will take months to be updated, and TP is definatly one of these mods.
I was expecting a long wait for TP but it is well worth the wait. I will be the first to install it when it comes out. :) it's going to be great with SMF 2.0, can't wait. :)
As a note,
if you go to the mod site and select 'advanced search', and select just 2.0 beta 3 Public from the version dropdown, you can see which mods have been updated.
is there any reason why SMF Gallery WOULDN'T work? I mean, isn't that pretty much a standalone add on? Will tell you later when I try, I suppose!
Any mods which use queries WON'T work. They need to be changed to the new format
Only simple mods will work.
basically if it calls db_query() , it wont work
Which is typically any mod that's adding in a new feature, since they have to add or modify the database.
dzinerstudio has updated all of his themes to work for the beta, per his site he was just waiting on the beta to go public, so there will be some strong themes out of the gate.
Was surprised there wasn't tighter coordination between Bloc and the Beta crew to keep that TP window as short as possible. Not complaining, but just sayin'.
Bloc has still not released TP 1.x to the public. I assume, once that is done, then upgrading TP to 2.0 will be on their list of priorities.
Glad to hear that Dziner is right on the ball with their themes. I really do like theirs. Actually, I haven't seen any updates for Bikken's themes. Either on this site or DzinerStudio official site.
Since there are quite a few mods for all the versions of SMF, is there a way to search the mod site based on version you are running? (I am not aware of a way to search by version) Or even just a category for any new 2.0 mods? It would just make it easier to find the new mods :)
Thanks for the release too :D

Select "2.0 Beta 3 Public" under version and hit search.

What is the etiquette on updating some one else's mod? I'm guessing there would be a difference between doing it for personal use and redistributing it back here.
If you update it for your personal use, it shouldn't be a problem. If you want to redistribute, you should get the author's permission first unless they specified a license that allows redistribution.
As the author of couple of mods in the mod site; should we upgrade our mods to the beta? Wouldn't there be a further change that will effect our mods until the final release? What if we wait for the release candidate or the final release?
The db-level stuff should be frozen for the most part. The theme stuff is still subject to change, however.
In general, I would recommend starting work on updating mods. The changes from now to final should be easy to update for and much smaller than the work of porting the mods from 1.1 to 2.0.
You can also wait for the first RC or even final, but be prepared to deal with very impatient people who decided they couldn't wait and upgraded.
Maybe the imageshack toolbar will work, ehehe..
This upgrade is beginning to look a lot like xp>vista :(
So far there are 51 mods 2.0 compatible.

Not really. SMF 2.0 doesn't have ANY negatives that I can see, other than the few
bugs undocumented features that still need
fixing documenting. :P And programs (mods) are getting updated quite rapidly. The only thing you have to wait for is the themes, since most theme authors are waiting for theme design to become more stable before upgrading their themes.

You have been a lifesaver for me. Thank you! I installed your two mods for 2.0 and they work perfectly! Once again thank you.
