Uploading to theme directories failing.

Hi,
I've had this problem that I just can't figure out for a while. I can't upload anything to the theme folders I have created by "create a copy of default" function. To modify it, I have to create a copy, then copy that onto my computer, then upload it into a different directory and then installing it "from directory". After which I can't modify it again through FTP.

If I try to upload a simple image file I get an error message "553-Can't open that file: Permission denied" and "553 Rename/move failure: No such file or directory" and I know it is there.

I can't change permissions on the folders, the FTP gives an error message "might not be supported on remote site" however I know it is supported.

It is getting annoying for not being able to add one little button to the theme because of this error.  Uploading to any other folder works fine, this is just about the SMF created theme folders.

thats because in most server setups you can't add files owned by your username to folders owned by another user.  Apache, specifically, normally users the user 'nobody', whereas your FTP uses your own username.  So when SMF adds files and folders through it, it will often end up with the owner 'nobody'

This is a server problem, not really an SMF problem.  Likewise the same can happen to apache which in turn can lead to white index pages or 403 forbidden errors.

The solution would be to have your host change the owner on the folders and everything in it to your username, and then have them enable phpsuexec so that your apache process can run under your username, thus working around this issue.

Thank you for your answer, I will contact my host. I have had some similar issues before, but only SMF-board seemed to lock me out completely, which made me think it was related to SMF. Be as it may, I would go through a lot of trouble to keep running SMF, as there's no board like it! :)

It actually may partially be SMF, come to actually think about it (i was pretty tired and not feeling good at the time).  I'll have to take a look into it i'm not entirely sure but i thought it was supposed to use your FTP information to create said folders..  I'll have to take a look at it later on today -- or perhaps someone else can pipe in

I would still contact your host though
