Ok at first i thought it was weird that someone would register qwertySMF on a Scion car forum... I searched Google and got 1,123 results for "qwertySMF" so i banned him.
Today that same user name was registered in two other forums (one which i left idle so i dont know how he found that site)

Today monday august 11 08' i searched Google and i found 2,260 results for "qwertySMF"

I am worried about some massive auto-registration bot.

Not sure this is a bug ;)

There are automated mass registrations out there. But you can mitigate it (to almost zero).

- Make sure your using smf 1.1.5 or 2.0 beta 3.1
- Enable visual verification on registration (aka captcha) AND set to at LEAST medium. (there are bots who can pass medium, but there are a hell of alot that can pass when set to low)
- Use one of the other anti-bot mods (using these, I get zero bot registrations)

I have 1.1.5 and captcha set to high.

search Google for "qwertSMF" see how many forums that username is registered on

Indeed, from time to time there are bots like this which register.

There isn't much we can do here.
Its upto every forum owner to make sure their forums settings prevent bot registration.

Thankfully though SMF doesn't have 1/100th of the problem that some other forum software has with bot registrations.

Thanks for the advice... I will add an anti-bot mod. Any specific one you would recommend?

Any, if you search for "anti-bot", they are ALL mine.

I have the same problem... qwertySMF registered on my forums... scionride.com [nofollow], urbanvw.com [nofollow], urbansmartcar.com [nofollow]

Its not a matter of banning the person... what if the person conducts a massive name registration where we cant keep track of names registered & massive spam?

I have SMF 1.1.5 and captcha set to high... going to add a anti-bot mod...

has anyone with a anti-bot mod found a username qwertySMF on their forum?

This very same qwertySMF joined our Christian forum this morning at 02:21:52 AM, using the IP of 89.76.10.138 and hostname of chello089076010138.chello.pl [nofollow] Ban it and make sure you use all the triggers as well when you ban it that way it can't rejoin your forum and cause you any problems.

I banned him, but couldn't check the raw logs, because it was manually deleted :S

Some strange is happening......

I'll update to 1.1.4 => 1.1.5

We actually sent back a polite messsage saying thanks but no thanks :)

Note there is another discussion about this going on in V1.x board

I'm bothered to discover that I cannot ban anybody from registering using this name, at least using normal bans. "Member name not found"

You should be able to ban anybody using a given username.

I'll add that to the list of "admin, root, moderator" but it would be nice if the general ban mechanism worked.

What is the sense of saying "username" cannot register while requiring them to be registered to ban them?

thanks for the info gang. Hes on two of my forums yesterday. Banning him now.

mprayii

why not register that account yourself, then ban it?

Fancy_Bob

Just set that name in reserved names under registration in admin console.

AJ32

It signed up at one of my site too.

Although I'm not worried by it, the odd thing was, it activated it's account the next day!

I banned it on all triggers. ;)

That's what I did, reserved "qwerty" from being part of any name. :)

Cais

This "bot" is making the rounds :(

I had my client start with this ban while I work on getting an Anti-Bot mod in place:

Ban All:
