Thinking of doing another forums and want to try out SMF 2.0, but i want to know what's in the pipeline and how soon, Will RC4 be next ? then RC5? after how many RC's before we see an Offcial 2.0 release..

And all the themes i see for Rc2 now will they have to be updated entirely for what ever new 2.0 comes ? or will the themes just release patches ?

If i can't get solid answers then i guess i will have to stick to SMF 1.1.11 :-\

if you want to try it out just do it i'm running rc2 and not ran into any major problems.
depends on the theme and how much the templates have altered between versions whether they will need updating.
the theme developers will update if needed.
same goes for the mods.

Is their an estimated deadline for Official 2.0 Release ?

bullbreedluverz

apparently there are only minor changes that will affect custom theme files when RC3 is released

Not that I know of, no. I haven't seen one that is publicly available, so I have no idea.

Are the various RC's complete upgrade packages ?? or do they come via package manager, like moving from 1.1.10 to 1.1.11 with one click

They cannot be done through the Package Manager IIRC. But, I could be wrong... when I've upgraded in the past, though, I have not used the Package Manager.

Bomber, I see the notice that 2.0 is not recommended for a production site which is what is turning me off, cause once up i don't really want to have to reinstall a new build from scratch..

The 2.0 release candidates are not recommended for a production site, but 2.0 final will be.

You don't have to install a new build to upgrade to 2.0; just download the Large Upgrade package for RC2 and run the upgrade script.

Actually I think SMF 2.0 RC2 is stable enough for a production site to be honest. But that note there is to indicate that there possibly are some bugs that might affect your forum work. But there are no critical ones like there were in first beta versions perhaps.

If you're at the moment thinking of trying out SMF 2.0 (RC2 currently) then I'd wait a little for RC3 as it is coming soon and has more bugfixes and even improved stability. This just so you won't have to upgrade your forum twice in a (hopefully) short time period.

Let me clarify a number of things from what I knew prior to leaving the team.

2.0 RC2 -> 2.0 RC3 is going to be a fairly awkward upgrade if you have a large number of mods, because a good number of issues that applied to 1.1.10 -> 1.1.11 will apply here; most of the same changes in that apply, especially the infamous Subs.php issues (though the && issue has been fixed!!)

Yes, that's right, the same vulnerability that 1.1.11 addressed will be addressed by RC3 for the 2.0 line.

The majority of modder time in updating mods is spent fixing the theme interaction, that's where the vast majority of issue was for upgrading 2.0 RC1 to 2.0 RC2; that hassle will NOT apply here in most cases since while there are theme tweaks, they don't affect most 2.0 mods.

I'd wait until 2.0 RC3 before making the move to the 2.0 line if you're coming from 1.1.x.

Ok, will definitely wait for Rc3 then a release date would be good lol, as I'm itching to try 2.0 but it would be for a production site .. thanks for the info guys..

Really hope somebody can give an indication as to when 2.0 Will be out for Official release..

It has been said multiple times before that there is no release date for 2.0 final, and mostly it's dependent on the number of bugs identified in RC3 (and RC4 if there is one; I don't personally believe there will be an RC4 though)

aw06

OK, .. i think when i started to use SMF i got a 1.1Rc .. and the integration to the final official was seamless and always came via package manager. as far as i can remember that is :-\

You can't upgrade RC's via the package manager. Doesn't happen. You will need to use a full upgrade pack. RC3 should be fine on a production site so I would advise using that when it is available, but personally I would not advise starting a new site with RC2 at this stage.

kat

Anything more recent than v1.1.11 is, in effect, a beta release.

That's why my forum's using v1.1.11.  :)

Correct, not even the devs know because 2.0 going official is based on how many bugs get identified in 2.0 RC2 and RC3 when it comes out.
