You really shouldn't stick everything world-writable, but sorry to tell you I'm not sure what's wrong.  Hopefully someone will pop in and help ya out.

If it wouldn't be a big deal for ya, I would suggest reinstalling SMF.  You may have had an issue with trying to install multiple ways & maybe caching the unchanged files, so you couldn't see that they were even written to.  Also, if you had permission problems, you may have written to certain files multiple times, or many other possibilities.

Now, to go way off topic, the watermelon vs face video was entertaining.  I loved the, "Well, we have to finish.". :)
Sorry, I'm a troll.

You can back up the database, and insert it into the new database.  By the way, I said it like that because I wouldn't remove your current forum, but use another subdirectory and set it up.  If it's solved from that, you can always move the forum to the current directory, and run the settings correction file.

Legolass

hmm could this be the answer to my problem? i tried to install the forum in a subdirectory and got this error
Quote!!Critical Error!
The installer has detected the mod_security module is installed on your web server. Mod_security will block submitted forms even before SMF gets a say in anything. SMF has a built-in security scanner that will work more effectively than mod_security and that won't block submitted forms.

IceXaos

I would definitely say that may be a possible answer to your problems.  Are you running this from a home server, or are you hosted?

/e/ Do you have access to the configuration files of your web server?

hosted on web-mania

Check my last post.  Sorry, I tried to not double-post, but I think I edited too late.

Legolass

No, but from that response, I would say you don't.  No offense meant by that.  You will probably have to contact your host to get an answer on that.

Legolass

no problem, i am sending them an email as we speak :) thanks again

No problem.  If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask, but if you're done, please tick this solved.

Legolass

still working on it!

Legolass, just a few suggestions to add; some things to consider:  Do set your directories permissions to 755 and your files to 644.  Set the "temp" directory (that you created inside your Packages folder) to 777.  However, just a comment about permissions:  they may appear to change when you set them but if you do not own the directories and files on your server, then setting permissions will not work correctly.  To check for ownership, log into your host-provided control panel and access your File Manager.  Look at the "owner" columns and, if you see your own username/groupname then you do own those particular files and directories.  If you see something else (an example might be "Apache") then you do not.  If you do not, you will need to "chown" to regain ownership.  If you don't know how to do this, your server can assist you.  Speaking of your server, do ask them if mod security is on and, if so, ask them to turn it off.  (Unfortunately, not every server will do this.)  Also, ask them if PHP Safe Mode is on.  If so, turning this off may help your mods to install correctly.

:)
My apologies, but I am taking a break from accepting PM requests for support.  If I am not currently assisting you, please do not ask as long as this notice is posted.  Thank you.

hi there sorry for the delay in replying. i never did sort the issue... until web-mania accidentally WIPED my entire forum. they were looking into a permissions issue with the databases and just cleared it!! i was so mad you would not believe. i have yet to hear from their management after the live chat person could not help me so we moved our site to godaddy

since the site move every mod has worked, so it must have been an issue with web-mania

I just stumbled across this Are you talking about my mod, WoW - World of Warcraft Tooltips?

If you are the main reason the mod doesn't work is due to a conflict between the Java script included in the mod written by Horus (from the Wowhead forums) and Mod_Security an anti hacking tool used by many, if not most,  webhosts. The process used in the script uses a trick similar to something some hackers use to infect websites. Since this script communicates only with Wowhead your chances of being hacked are almost impossible, short of someone taking over Wowhead itself and changing the way things are done on their end.

Short of getting your host to change the rules for Mod_Security for your site or switching to a host that doesnt use Mod-Security, this mod probably isn't going to work for you.

Ive been looking at other ways to work around this mess and I stumbled across http://www.wowhead-tooltips.com/ They offer a paid solution ($25) that puts tooltips in your forum but I haven't purchased the mod from them myself. Chances are they use something entirely different from what I'm doing and even if they are, reverse engineering their script and incorporating it into mine could be legally problematic.

Arantor wrote a mod currently maintained by Robbo_ for the game Aion called [ur=http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2085l]Aion Syndication[/url], it creates tooltips for that game but I haven't looked into how it works. It could be that the system used by wherever the mod getting the tooltip information from is completely different then the way Wowhead is set up.  None the less perhaps Robbo_ might be willing to convert the mod to work for Warcraft.

Aside from my personal feelings about SMF at the moment I'm still trying to find a better fix for the Mod_Security issue with this mod as the base scripts used in it are portable to other web publishing systems such as VB, WP, etc. Mind you they have  the same issues with the scripts and Mod_Security that SMF does, which is probably the reason Horus abandoned the project long before I picked it up.
