Edit and Remove Post timing

This is kinda a strange one, but I have members to my forum that have decided that they don't want to participate anymore.  But because the theme of the forum is a very personal one, they frequently request that the have their entire profile deleted.  And all their posts deleted.

I don't want them to have access to delete their profile, because then they could come back under a different name (and potentially cause problems).  We also don't want to alienate anyone by "banning" a username, which would be perceived as a harsh punishment, when that's not at all the message we want to convey.

The other problem is that I don't want to give access to "everybody" to go around editing and removing their posts, because that makes debates seem really awkward, not to mention that people think they can say anything and then delete it and it somehow has no consequence.  (We're going through some growing pains hehe)

So...Is there any way to have a limit to editing time, but still allow users to "remove" their posts so that they fall into the recycle board?

If a member is allowed to delete their profile, does it mean all their posts get deleted and poof?  And if they do that, is there any way that they can be prevented from making a different name to post under?  (other than banning the user completely)

Do you already have the recycle board setup?
Admin>Manage Boards and Categories>Settings>Enable recycling of deleted topics

If you set that up, all deleted topics no matter who deleted them will go there. Why don't you just not allow normal users to delete their topics though? For edit times and such, there is this area:
Admin>Manage Posts and Topics>Post Settings

I have all of that set up.  I think I'm either not explaining properly or I'm not sure what it is I'm trying to do myself.

I have it set so members can't delete their profiles, but they are adamant about having this control.  I think my problem is that I'm a softie.  So I want to make 100% certain that if we allow deleting profiles, that the posts don't disappear with the profile.

Although I'm tempted to say that it isn't possible to delete a profile, as that would allow people to come back with a different member name, which would ruin consistency and allow people to hide and do nefarious things.  The only way to get rid of your profile is to set up a ban.

But I think that'll go over like dead weight.  :/

I'm sorry, I got distracted mid-post so I forgot that part of your post. You explained it fine the first time.

When a member deletes their account, their posts will not be deleted. They will just show up as a guest posted them.

Although I do believe if their account is deleted they can still come back under the same name, or a different name.

Thanks.  In the event that we do end up deleting profiles, that will be good.

I still think it's better to just ban them and instead of a warning, leave a message that says, if you wish to be reinstated, send an email to [email protected].

Ugggh.  Who said it was fun to run a forum?  :o

Kill Em All

The idea about leaving a message sounds good too in my opinion.

Feel free to mark this solved if it is, if not, let us know if you need any further assistance. :)

Thanks!  I appreciate your help with this ;)

One more question, is there any way to hide a member's posts?  maybe that's the alternative to deleting them...ban the membername and hide the membername's posts?

Or maybe I'm just overthinking here, trying to make too many people happy.  Maybe it's better just to leave the posts alone, and tough luck, you posted, so it stays...?

Other than my mental exercise in futility (trying to please everyone), I think it's solved lol

Kill Em All

If certain users don't want to see the posts, tell them to put the user on their ignore list.

hahahahahaha

I think they like to torture themselves.  I installed the mod that allows them to ignore entire boards, users, whatever.  They'd prefer to come to the forum and proclaim how awful it is, and how they refuse to "live under a dictatorship".

It's hysterical, really.  No amount of "Vote with your feet" gets them to stop.  So I thought if we put people in a group that had no access to the board that appears to irritate them, then they'd stop, but finding out that they're in "membergroup-1" made them more irritated.

I think the only solution at this point is "kill 'em all" lololol

Thanks :)  I'm gonna mark this solved, because I really think now that being even more of a dictator than they already think I am (we are) is the only real solution to the problem.

Kill Em All

Don't aim to please everyone, do what you think is right and what most members, or your most valued members like.  You will only fail at pleasing everyone.

Kill Em All

Under the experience section of your mind. lol

You'll def learn the ropes after awhile. Every forum is different for how to be a moderator, you'll learn the right feel.
