Package Problems

If at all possible I would appreciate some help with a long term problem I have been experiencing. I think it started when I first upgraded to smf 2, probably over a year ago now.

The problem Im having is that I cant install or uninstall any modifications at all. This is causing me major problems on the forum in particular as I take income for forum adverts. So I really need the ad management mod installed and working.

I have tried a workaround by asking advice on how to hardcode the banner adverts into the forum homepage. Sadly no help has been forthcoming, so I think the only thing to do is sort out the packages problem once and for all.

At present I have 2 packages installed but not working (Analytics mod and ad management mod). I cant uninstall them and I get a parse error. I have tried installing other packages but also get parse errors on everything I try to install.

I believe the problem lies with the packages installer rather than the packages themselves.

So any advice on how to get things working again would be really appreciated. How about a complete fresh install ? will that do the trick? or is that a non starter.

If you asked me, you can always reinstall/reupgrade your forum all over again and see how. Use the largest upgrade package.

for banner ads I use a piece of html m8 added anywhere you want,I use it with global headers and footer. If you want the code drop me a pm m8.I changed for same reason I had problems with ad management.

Hi mate, please reread my post. Its not the package thats the problem, its the package manager as I cant add any mods at all, nothing.

What error do you get at the time of installing ?

Try making a "temp" folder in your "Packages" folder with write permissions

glennk

ok I did that. I got the simple ads mod installed, but it wont work, its throwing errors. This seems to happen with every package I try to install. I may sound paranoid but I think something is screwing with the package manager. Surely 1 package I try to install should work.

And this happen from the last upgrade. IMHO large upgrade package will ensure that everything is back in order. It will have no bad effect to your forum at all.

Hi again.

I have redone the upgrade and all went ok in respect of that. However the problems with the package installation continues. The package says its installed, but when you look for the appropriate information in the admin panel it is not there. This is very strange as I have an identical forum on another domain (same hosts) and all the packages work fine on that forum.

More assistance to get to the bottom of this would be really appreciated as I need to get an advertisment package working on the forum.

Many thanks for your continued help and patience.

This could be a database problem then. Normally when an update didn't fully upgrade all the database tables, then a problem like this will occur. I will ask somebody else to look at this and help you check your database soonest.

glennk,

some checks first:

1- you over-wrote ALL the forum files with clean files from the large upgrade package?
2- You are running your forum in English? (English UTF-8 is NOT the same as English)
3- You are using the default theme?
4- you are **CERTAIN** that chown and chmod are set correctly?
5- Your host is NOT running your server with mod_security.

1. Yes

2. How to check ?

3 yes

4. How to check

5. Not 100% certain as I dont understand, but I have another forum with the same hosts and packages work fine on that one.

glennk

is this significant ? Got this info from phpmyadmin

MySQL charset:  UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

Kindred

yes....   that suggests that your forum is actually in English UTF-8. Since mods only install in "English", you have no "text" for the mod to display.

Eithe switch the forum to English, or copy modifications.english.php to modifications.englishutf8.php

not sure if this is the problem. The second forum database also says the same yet the mods work fine on that one. How to switch the forum to english ?

glennk

Still getting major issues here.

Im now getting this error :

QuoteIssue with the Ad Mod
LoadAds.php is missing/corrupt from your sources directory. Please make sure that it uploaded properly. The Ad mod won't be able to function properly. If you are having issues, please visit www.smfads.com!
However I just ftp'd that file into the right place and still the error persists.

Ive retried the upgrade. Could this be the problem :

550 /www/vhosts/holderness-coast-fishing.co.uk/httpdocs/forum: No such file or directory

glennk

Ok,

I have added the package manually. When I did this it became evident that the package manager had not edited a single file during the install process. Why would this be ?
