You can go from 1.1.14 to 2.0.2. No need to get to 1.1.15 or 1.1.16.
Always be a little kinder than necessary.

Is it an overwrite, or is it via the Package manager?

Upgrading SMF

It's not done via Package Manager. See the link above. It's not too bad to upgrade it.

Because of the fact that my forum is my site, what about going the convertor route?

Kill Em All

With the upgrade package going from SMF 1.1.14 to SMF 2.0.2, you won't lose any of your members or forum posts. What you will lose is any mods or custom themes you have installed because you are replacing all the files with new ones.

As everyone else has said, make sure to back up all  your forum files and the database.

Yep, you'll definitely lose those. You could save server space by deleting them from "Packages" and "Themes" directories, too.

Mark_Breznay

Ok I've backed up the forum.  In cpanel, is there somewhere that shows you where/how to back up the db?>

Any time, Mark! :)

In answer to your CPanel question, I wrote this, a while back:

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Backup

It tells you how to do the forum, the db and everything. :)
